Re: 20th July; A Rousing Stave
"E is for the Ensign that at the peak flew,
F is for the Fo'c'sle where lives our fine crew,
Oh! G is for the Galley where the saltjunk smells strong,
An' H is for the Halyards we hoist with a song."
Which last they didn't, of course, this being a Navy ship. He was still self-conscious because he wasn't used to so much attention, either good or bad - when folks paid attention to him it was his experience that it was generally a bad thing. This was... strange.

Re: 20th July; A Rousing Stave
"Merrily, cheerily
So merry sail we, no mortal on earth like a sailor at sea
and it’s
Heave away, haul away, the ship rolls along
Give a sailor his grog and there’s nothing goes wrong."
Grinning, Tide and the lads around him found themselves joining the chorus themselves.
Re: 20th July; A Rousing Stave
Terry's confidence was growing a little as the men joined in. He relaxed a little against the bow-chaser, though he still kept his eyes on Murray and Timlin.
"I is for the Eyebolt - no good for the feet,
J is for the Jibs, boys, stand by the lee sheet,
Oh! K is for the Knightheads where the shantyman stands,
And L is for the Leeside hard found by new hands."
Were they going to let him do the whole thing, or would they stop partway through?

The lads around were beaming. It wasn't a tune to dance to but it was perfectly enjoyable despite that.
Re: 20th July; A Rousing Stave
"M's for the mainmast, it's stout and it's strong
N's for the needle that never points wrong
O's for the oars of our old jolly boats
And P's for the pinnace that lively do float."
There wasn't much aboard ship that Terry could do with any real confidence - although he could go aloft, if only to the foretop, and knew the sails. He was still learning his ropes - there were miles of cordage in Terpsy, after all - but already knew the braces. He could sing, though, even if he'd never really done it in front of an audience before.

Re: 20th July; A Rousing Stave
Murray had hooked his thumbs over the top of his old leather belt, which kept him from moving about too much and thereby risking missing a beat. It was just as well, perhaps, thought Tide. The mizzentopman was obviously a visual anchor for the nipper.

Re: 20th July; A Rousing Stave
"Q's for the quarterdeck where our officers stand
And R's for the rudder that keeps the ship in command
S is for the stunsails that drive her along
T's for the topsail, to get there takes long."
He didn't quite dare to take his eyes off Murray - he was well aware of everyone standing there listening, but if he didn't see them, he didn't have to be aware of them, properly. And he'd got over his initial nerves, mostly, and was starting to enjoy himself - but still didn't want to know just how large the audience had grown.

While he was aware that his own voice was nothing to boast about, Tide was willing enough to join in with the chorus, because he wasn't the only lad doing so. It didn't sound so bad alongside the others, anyway!
Re: 20th July; A Rousing Stave
During the chorus, he risked shifting his focus to look across at Timlin, who gave him a wink.
"U's for the uniform, mostly worn aft
V's for the vangs running from the main gaff
W's for water, we're on a pint and a pound
And X marks the spot where old Stormy was drowned."

There were now more voices taking up the chorus, it seemed. Some of them belonged to Marines, Tide noted. For once he was not of a mind to be affronted at their sticking their noses in.
Re: 20th July; A Rousing Stave
Terry unconsciously aped Murray's posture, hooking his thumbs into his belt.
"Y's for the yardarm, needs a good sailor man
Z is for Zoe, I'm her fancy man
Z's also for zero in the cold winter time
And now we have brought all the letters in rhyme."

Murray drew the last line out a little, and when he'd finished, he swept his hat off and made a bow in Button's direction.
Re: 20th July; A Rousing Stave
Terry grinned, a little shyly. It had turned out to be surprisingly fun - and he'd remembered all the words, too.
He turned to see what Mister Evans had made of it.

Re: 20th July; A Rousing Stave
"Good lad!" Tide declared, thrusting a hand at Button. A hand which held a horn mug containing half a tot of neat rum. The usual issue to petty officers and the remnants of Tide's share.
Re: 20th July; A Rousing Stave
Terry gave the older man a slightly abashed look before blinking at the mug thrust under his nose. He took the mug with a quizzical look before taking a swallow of the contents, spluttering when he found it held neat rum, not the three-water grog he was used to.
Re: 20th July; A Rousing Stave
The men nearest laughed, amused by the nipper's surprise. Tide himself grinned and said, "Not bad stuff, is it?"
Re: 20th July; A Rousing Stave
"Wasn' expectin' it," Terry said frankly, looking at the darkly fragrant liquid in the mug, before glancing up at the quartermaster. "But yeah... s'nice." He had another mouthful, a smaller and slightly more cautious one, before offering the mug back.
Re: 20th July; A Rousing Stave
Timlin had by now struck up a lively reel but Tide was listening with only half an ear. He accepted the mug back with a grin.
"A good job done wants a good reward," he observed, cradling the mug between both hands.

Re: 20th July; A Rousing Stave
Terry's face, which had nearly regained its normal colour, went pink again, though with pleasure rather than embarrassment this time.
"Really?" Mister Evans had liked it? He grinned at Tide and the other men with a look of somewhat shy pride.

Re: 20th July; A Rousing Stave
The quartermaster nodded. "Aye. It's nice to find lads what got good voice-boxes in 'em!"
Re: 20th July; A Rousing Stave
Terry shuffled his feet a little before dropping ungracefully back to the deck and pulling his feet in until his was sitting cross-legged, tailor-fashion.
"I ain't never... Nobody never wanted to hear it, afore," he muttered, feeling self-conscious all over again.

Re: 20th July; A Rousing Stave
"No-o," Terry allowed, and looked up. "But when folks don't even wanna hear you talkin'..." he added with a shrug.
Re: 20th July; A Rousing Stave
The quartermaster waved his hand dismissively. "Lads forget they was nippers once their own selves, is all."
Re: 20th July; A Rousing Stave
Terry gave a half-shrug at that. All he knew was that grown-up folks seemed to like telling him to shut up a lot.
