July 24, 1809: The Morning after Empty July 24, 1809: The Morning after

Post  Edward Torrington Tue Jan 21, 2014 1:26 am

Captain Torrington woke up an hour before dawn, feeling remarkably well - until he tried to move and a lance of pain shot through his back and shoulder, settling in his skull. It took some blinking and several careful attempts to move to establish that he was lying on the ground, clutching some kind of fur around him, that the hard things digging into his cheek were the buttons of his coat, and that his inability to move his legs properly stemmed from the fact that he still wore spures and they had managed to get tangled in some leather tack.

As his eyes adjusted, he saw a tent that looked remarkably like his own, wich only added to the mystery of what he was doing out here in a position that changed from quite comfortable to supremely awkward quite rapidly.

Willoughby was still about where he had fallen asleep and to what he had clung to as if afraid someone might remove him from his nice spot. It was oddly comfortable and pleasant and he could even stretch and there was a nice blanket he was covered with, which made him feel warmer.

He still had his boots on and his legs had remained mostly hanging awkwardly over that edge until somewhere in the middle of the night when they had been tucked up and onto the bed. He nuzzled into what resembled something closest to a pillow and was still in deep sleep. Better so, for the moment he would wake, he would learn why drinking too much made for grumpy men in the morning.

July 24, 1809: The Morning after Empty Re: July 24, 1809: The Morning after

Post  Edward Torrington Wed Jan 22, 2014 3:54 am

Not particularily relishing the prospect of having to face anybody while in a rather stiff and inelegant sprawl on the floor, Torrington tried to get up quickly and silently, but the movement made his head swim and the pain behind his temples multiply, and in the end he staggered and dropped down again onto the sitting log.

After a few long moments he noticed the water kettle, forgotten over the ashes of the fire, and a mug still half filled with what appeared to be tea.
The brew was cold and bitter by now, but it revived him somewhat and chased whatever had died in his mouth away, and after another mug of water the engineer felt prepared to attempt getting to his feet again.

He idly wondered why his blue uniform seemed to be covered not only with dust and leaves, but also with black stains, yellow feather down and a blue pelisse- now liberally dirtied with all the other things as well.

Hoping that a change of clothing, a splash of cold water and maybe even a shave (if he could procure hot water) would help him to find his usual equilibrum, he carefully moved into his tent. His brain offered a vague recollection of Willoughby and a bottle of wine ...

Willoughby had not woken even with the sounds that came from the entrance of the tent and seemed more than willing to remain asleep in his newly acquired bed. That the tent muffled the sounds from outside at least a little, and prevented a breeze from coming in, is a bonus. The only discomfort so far at sleeping in that bed was that he should have undone his dolman with that many buttons, itching to poke at him in one way or another.

He only stirred a tiniest bit when the flap was lifted and some cold air was let inside, but then snuggled deeper under the blanket and continued to sleep.

Once inside, Torrington blinked a few times to get accustomed to the dark. He had a vague impression of a shape at his table and the outlines of his bed in the back; identifying the shape as possibly Willoughby, he tried to reach the bed as silently as possible, in the hope that a short rest there would stop the persistent pounding in his head.

Two curses later (he did not remember his table to have that sharp a corner, and what was his second chair doing right in his way?) he finally reached it and dropped down heavily ...

There was not much of a warning when it came. It dropped suddenly and it felt as if Herrero had just decided to play dog and crash his large flanks right on top of him!

A rather sharp mixture of gasp and grunt was heard at the contact followed by a strained, though much louder. "HERRERO OFF!" And then another groan that stemmed entirely from the hussar's realisation that sudden motions caused the head to feel like to bursting because of all the pain it carried.

Startled when his bed suddenly moved and shouted, the engineer shot to his feet again, only to immediately collapse against the table as his blood pressure protested the sudden upward motion.

Groaning he groped around until he got enough of a grip to pull himself up.

Post  Timothy Willoughby Thu Jan 23, 2014 12:42 am

Willoughby was up, but he wished he would have knocked himself out cold! His head felt like something had shattered and its shards were now stabbing everything inside of the scull.

He curled on the bed holding the side where Torrington had collapsed on him earlier and his head with the other hand and whimpered. The taste in his mouth was not quite pleasant but at least he had not vomited the night before!

He opened his eyes slowly and blinked. It finally struck him that he was not with the 15th Hussars, but in another man's bed, an officer's bed no less. He shot up finding his pelisse missing. His eyes stopped on the silhuette of a man trying to prop himself up. He was not sure whether there was another there and wished for some more light in the tent so that he could properly see! He would prefer there not to be too much light, because he sensed his head would feel worse.

He just groaned and fell back into the bed.

It was probably all just a really weird dream. He closed his eyes and waited. The headache which remained even after a few long moments, reminded him though that it was not a dream and the reality was not going to just disappear.

".....I might just be still dreaming...but....I struggle to recall why exactly I am here!" Which was a question for the bed more than the tent.

Vickery woke with a groan, to find himself slumped over his table rather than lying in his cot. Surely Cotton could have contrived to get him into his bed rather than leaving him to fall asleep over the Company returns?

He fumbled a hand up to his head, wondering what on earth the yelling was about.

He only understood half of the mumbled comment, and even less of the yelling before, but there were growing indications that the person occupying his bed was Willoughby ... so who was the now moving lump on the table? Deciding that the situation would benefit from some light, even if his eyes might not thank him for it, the engineer tried to locate a candle or his lamp - something he managed by nearly knocking his head on it.

He also managed to find his French matches and the small bottle containing sulphuric acid, but the lamp would not ignite; it had burned empty during the night. At least it was possible to see in the light of the match that the person at the table was Vickery - and to find the candle in his writing desk.

Having finally managed to produce a modicum of light, Torrington located the chair and collapsed on it, growning. It sounded suspiciously like something with "coffee".

Willoughby made an effort to sit up a second time. He was much slower now and once up, began to rub his temples, his eyes closed.

"....ughh.." He grunted. He looked up and located the silhuette of Torrington again. The light finally identified him, though it cast strange lines across his face. He sighed. " Captain...." He wondered if that strange lump that had suddenly moved was another captain too. "..ss..?" He turned it into plural with some effort.

Post  Friedrich Rottländer Sat Jan 25, 2014 9:40 am

Outside another person had likewise been woken by the shout and found himself in a position he could not remember getting into. Freddie was pretty sure he had not made it to his bedroll yesterday, yet here he was, with boots and coat off and comfortably tucked in.

Realizing that the sounds in the tent meant that Torrington must be up, and he therefore had overslept and no coffee ready, Freddie shot to his feet, and after a quick hopping around to get his boots on, set with derwish-like speed about relighting the fire, brewing coffee and tosting bread.

"Cotton, put that lantern out," Vickery said - at least, he attempted to say; what actually emerged was a mumble that bore very little actual resemblance to the words intended. The feeble batting against the light was clearer in its meaning though.

There was another mumble that sounded as though it was trying to be the word, "Coffee?"

Post  Timothy Willoughby Sat Jan 25, 2014 9:56 am

"Where's my pelisse?" Willoughby may not have felt like getting out of the tent, he really wished to postpone figuring out where, why and how, but he more than anything wanted to know where his pelisse was! It was not draped over his shoulder, nor was he wearing it. He could not feel it around the bed, nor see it anywhere in the dim light.

"'scuse me." He did not care much for coffee, but something to ease his trobbing mind. "If anybody has seen a pelisse.. .shout.. " He began then winced. "Say it real quiet.." He added starting to get up to search for it himself.

Little chick, that had just begun to wake due to all the noise started to chirp inside of Torrington's breastpocket and shuffle around trying to get a little more are and more comfort. She had managed to scamper in somewhere during the night, but found out now that the horizontal position had been replaced by a far less helpful, vertical.

Torrington, still not quite up to speed, tried to find the pelisse on his shoulder in polite reflex, but stopped, aghast, when suddenly he could feel something move against his chest.

"What ...?"

---------

Freddie - who had found the pelisse on the ground just outside the tent and already wondered - blinked several times at the sight before him when he entered the tent. But then he quickly stopped thinking and darted forward to prevent Captain Vickery from accidentally toppling over the candle and setting the tent aflame.

It had the added benefit that he also had to slam his tray, bearing the coffee pot and a delicate porcelain cup and saucer, onto the table right in front of Vickery to catch the candlestick. The pelisse fell to the floor somewhere near the table, the lace on it briefly catching the light.

"My pelisse!" Willoughby had spotted it, saw it fall from Freddie and knew the pile of fabric was nothing else but the pelisse he had been missing Why Freddie had it was more confusing.

He blinked several times then bent down to reach for it, not caring if he was in the way. He heard the cup slip a little on a saucer and could smell coffee, but his pelisse was of greater importance at the moment.

"...Freddie Rott...lander, is that you?" He hugged his pelisse and then began to fuss over it, dusting the fur and fabric.

Freddie, starring at Willoughby wide-eyed, shook his head wildly and stepped back, tring to protect Torrington's belongings from whatever was happening here.

"No, no ... that is your pelisse! Captain, uhm, would you ... coffee? Shaving water? Peggie???"

The last was an incredulous exclamation as Torrington finally managed to get hold of the unexpectant lodger in his coat and pulled her out, peering at her sharply as if to gauge whether he was seeing things or she was real.

Swamped with too many demands on his service at once, the young German decided that hospitality had been declared the most important duty of a host by Torrington, so he poured a cup of coffee for Vickery and offered it cautiously. He seemed pretty much to expect to wake up any moment - and just one catastrophe short of screaming for Cotton.

Vickery finally managed to blink his eyes open to find Friedrich Rottlaender standing in front of him, offering a cup of coffee. He rubbed his eyes, trying to make sense of this, and decided that if this was a dream, he was still going to have the coffee.

"Thank you," he managed, his voice sounding far rougher than usual.

He took the cup, wondering why Rottlaender had taken Cotton's place as his servant, and came to the conclusion that dreams never made sense, but the coffee was good.

A few seconds later, and still with a headache and stiff neck, he managed to ask the world at large, "This isn't a dream, is it?"

The chick had become louder because she was starting to get quite upset at being so ignored and at not being set on the shoulder where she could see the world again, but left in the stifling environment of Torrington's pocket. She might have forgiven the officer if that pocket contained atleast a few crumbs, perhaps a whole biscuit or even some bread. Since The officer did not think of her however, she was going to throw a proper little lady fit!

He tugged his pelisse closer. "But should it be a dream, I think I will take advantage of this bed for a little longer. One never knows when next one would dream of something as comfortable and as nice and warm." Very, very carefully, Torrington set the chick on the table, walked to the bed and lifted the blanket. After looking down at Willoughby for a moment with a bemused expression, he replaced it, went to sit down at the table, took the second cup Freddie was preparing, and drank the hot liquid in one go.

It burned, but it felt and tasted like too-hot coffee and gave the whole situation some semblance of normalcy.

Picking up the empty bottle which had rolled off the table at one point, and placing it on the table again, he said contemplatively: "I think we should not have drunk this. Does your head feel slightly too large too?"
