To M. Seviere, Le Havre, Normandy, France
[Letter dated 22nd July 1809. Written in French, a translation given below]
M. Seviere,
I am sorry thus to communicate to you the terrible news of the death of your son Francois. I had the misfortune to be in command of a detachment of men detailed to take a bridge, among whose gallant defenders your son was numbered. Your son was wounded early on in the skirmish, and was found later by one of my soldiers, who stayed by him to offer what comfort and reassurance he could, including making a promise to somehow get the news to you.
I am aware that it can be but very little comfort to learn this news, and from the pen of an Englishman. Your son fought bravely and gallantly and died a soldier of France, and was buried as befits such.
I do not know how long this letter may take to reach you and hope with all my heart that it may serve to bring you some small comfort in your time of grief.
A votre service,
Jean Vickery, Capitaine de 5/60ème Rifles, L'Armee Britannique, Espagne
