Re: 8 Aout, à la pointe du jour
Montreuil glanced up, but instead of answering he held out the empty cup. "Five drops in water. See if you can get him to drink it," he said with a nod in Charcot's direction.

Foucheaux nodded and took the cup, then poured water from the pitcher and counted out the drops as instructed.
He knelt down next to Charcot. "Here, mate. Drink this. It'll make you feel better." Charcot seemed to be terrified of something, or nothing, but he was not listening. He did not even respond when Foucheaux touched his shoulder, at least not at first. He had pressed himself into a ball as tight as he could, but as his rapid breathing continued, he began to unfurl.
So this was dying, Charcot thought. His limbs were tingling, growing numb, and he felt dizzy, hot, sick. Why couldn't he breathe? How could he be breathing and yet not have enough air? He kicked out clumsily with his legs. He pushed himself onto his hands and knees. He needed to get outside, somewhere with air, even if he had to crawl!
"Whoa, easy, mate! Stop, sit back!" Foucheaux tried to push him back into a sitting position. Charcot was not even looking at him. Was he blind again? "Charcot! Dominic, it's me, Foucheaux. It's all right!" He looked over his shoulder at the surgeon while holding the cup away from Charcot's flailing limbs. "What's wrong with him?"
Re: 8 Aout, à la pointe du jour
Montreuil straightened grimly, striding the few steps across the room. "Soldat Charcot." The surgeon's voice was hard and knife sharp; he didn't raise it, he didn't need to.

Re: 8 Aout, à la pointe du jour
Charcot eyes were wild, but there was recognition as he looked up at the surgeon. "Help," he managed to gasp, reaching up to grab him with the desperation of a drowning man.
"This will help," Foucheaux said gently, holding out the cup, but Charcot was not listening to him.

Re: 8 Aout, à la pointe du jour
Montreuil knelt beside him, taking the cup from Foucheaux with his free hand and holding it to Charcot's mouth. "Drink."

Re: 8 Aout, à la pointe du jour
It was difficult to drink anything at all with every breath calculated to draw in the most possible air, but such was the trust that Charcot had for Montreuil's medical authority that he obeyed. He wrapped both of his hands around the surgeon's hand on the cup, and in many small sips, he managed to swallow most of its contents. In spite of its difficulty, the very act of drinking liquid seemed to help, and by the time he had finished his breaths were already slowing somewhat. He released his grip on Montreuil and sagged back in his corner, watching the surgeon in woeful weakness. Then he was possessed of a series of powerful hiccups.

"Take him back to the other room," he told Foucheaux, pushing to his feet. "He should rest now."
Montreuil turned back to the bed. Paol was slumped half off of the mattress, one hand brushing the floor. He wasn't moving. His skin, as the surgeon rolled him back onto the bed, was almost too hot to touch, and his eyes, though half open were dull and unseeing.

Re: 8 Aout, à la pointe du jour
Foucheaux wrapped Charcot's arm around his own shoulder and helped him rise to his feet. He was able to walk, though he was trembling. Foucheaux gave him a reassuring pat on the shoulder. "C'mon mate. Let's get you back to bed. You'll feel better after a sleep."
As he opened the door, he encountered the girl Manuela who was preparing to knock. She stepped aside to let the two soldiers out, and then she stepped into the room. She saw the surgeon rolling Paol's limp body back onto the bed. Hadn't she just heard his voice a moment ago? But now he looked completely lifeless. "What happened? Is he dead?" she whispered.

Montreuil glanced up from bandaging Kerjean's arm. "No, not dead," he replied, unconsciously re-checking for the shallow rise and fall of his chest.

Re: 8 Aout, à la pointe du jour
For a moment she just stood there, staring to make sure he really wasn't dead.
Then Foucheaux returned, moving past her into the room. "I think he'll fall asleep soon. Do I need to stay with him?" He was rather weary of sitting at bedsides, but watching over Charcot would at least mean he could lie in a bed himself.

"No, you needn't stay. No—one moment. What was his -- Kerjean's -- condition during the night?"

Re: 8 Aout, à la pointe du jour
"He was confused, really upset and frightened. He slept sometimes, and sometimes we talked like normal, but other times he didn't seem to know where he was or what was happening. I just gave him some of that laudanum a couple of times when he wouldn't calm down. And he drank some water and ate a little bit of an orange, and sometimes he was hot and sometimes cold." He sighed wearily. "But that's normal for a fever, right?"

Re: 8 Aout, à la pointe du jour
The report was unexpectedly direct and informative. Montreuil nodded. "Normal, yes." Optimistic, no.
"Señorita Castillo," he continued in Spanish, addressing the girl who was still standing there, "Would you fetch some fresh water?"

She looked up in surprise. "Oh. Yes, of course. This much?" she asked, picking up the jug. "Or a whole bucket?"

For a moment Kerjean's eyes seemed to focus, as if recognizing the girl's voice, but only for a moment, then they emptied again.
"The jug will be sufficient," the surgeon told her, tying off the bandage and lowering Kerjean's arm back onto the blankets.

She turned to leave but then hesitated. "How is he?" she asked the surgeon. "In the night he was like a madman."

"What are you telling her?" Foucheaux asked. If it was about Kerjean, he wanted to know as well.
Manuela took that as her cue to leave, taking the pitcher with her and heading down the stairs.

"She asked how he was," Montreuil replied flatly, "I told her."
He rolled Kerjean carefully onto his side. His shoulder looked no better than the day before, but neither did it look any worse. A faint whimpering moan was the only resistance Kerjean offered as the surgeon probed it with his fingers, he didn't even tense.

Foucheaux just stood there, staring and thinking, a worried frown on his face. A few minutes later the girl returned with the pitcher.
"Here is the water, Señor surgeon. I don't remember your name."

Re: 8 Aout, à la pointe du jour
"Thank you," he said, taking it from her, "My name is Montreuil. And if you're going to stay, Monsieur Foucheaux," he added, switching to French, "You might as well sit down before you fall down."
Setting the pitcher down, he reached into his bag, withdrawing a small case containing several vials. He selected one containing a brown powder and scooped a small amount into the cup and mixed it with water.
"Monsieur Kerjean--" There was no response. Kerjean's eyes were half closed and bleary, there was no indication that he had even heard. Sitting on the edge of the bed, the surgeon lifted Kerjean's head, frowning as he did so -- there was a crust of blood beneath the hair as if he'd been struck there -- and put the cup to his mouth.
Even in the midst of tremendous distress, a firm command could usually get through to Paol; obedience had been brutally ingrained in him since birth, and whatever his conscious leanings, the instinct was still there. But even Montreuil's terse direction to drink could not conjure up so much as a flicker of anything resembling life.
He frowned again, then glanced at the girl, an idea growing in his mind. "Señorita Castillo... I would like you to come here and try talking to him."

"Anything. Count backwards from one hundred, for all I care. Just talk to him. He seemed to respond to your voice a moment ago, he may do so again."

"Oh." She looked down at him with a concerned frown. "Hello Paol. It's Manuela. I brought you some water. Will you take a drink? Water - l'eau? Do you want some l'eau?"

Re: 8 Aout, à la pointe du jour
Kerjean's brow contracted in a frown and he blinked up at her, then his gaze dimmed and seemed to slide off of her and he blinked again, anxiety creeping into his face as he fought to hold her in focus. He became aware all of the sudden of Montreuil's hand on him and he started, trying to jerk away with a muffled cry.
"Steady..." Montreuil tipped the cup up against his teeth and Kerjean seemed as though he would resist, but as the contents sloshed into his mouth, he swallowed, and then gulped at it as if his body understood what was needed, even if his mind could not. He began to cough then and the surgeon pulled the empty cup away, holding his head up until the fit subsided before lowering it back unto the pillow.
