This was no reassurance. She could have done anything she liked while his eyes had been closed and it was very possible that she had. Either one of them, in fact. And hadn't the younger one been singing something? Or humming, anyway. Stéphane frowned, but was careful to keep still while the surgeon was looking closely at his hands. "But he called you a witch," he said in plain suspicion.

Oh, for the love of God... Montreuil looked up in annoyance from examining the leg wound -- the ball appeared to have passed straight through. "I've been known to call people a great many things, Monsieur. I could, for example --" Taking a strip of linen, he tore off a small section, folding it and rolling it into a cylinder roughly the size of a thumbnail, "Call you a superstitious fool -- I will need nine more of those," he interjected, handing the small roll to Madame Bellot, "But I doubt you would so readily embrace the identity."

*

Mathilde looked anxiously behind them -- Monsieur Montreuil did not appear to have noticed them yet -- then up at the wagon. "How are you going to get back up? Oh -- would something to stand on help?"

Marie-Eve attempted to suppress a smile at the surgeon's comments, but she immediately made herself look grave as he handed her the bandages.  As she began unrolling and tearing the strips, she heard a familiar cry coming from her own newly-acquired wagon.  Rémy-Jean.  The sound quickly grew maddening, but he would just have to cry and wait.

The response made Stéphane frown. "I would rather that than be decried for a witch," he quipped. Unless the surgeon made a habit of accusing people of such terrible things simply because he enjoyed it. His own comment made this seem possible. "Or a slanderous heap of - "

It was probably just as well that he was interrupted by the abrupt wail of a child rose from somewhere fairly close by.

Post  Jérémie Blanchard on Mon Jun 17, 2013 7:35 am

In the interest of speed, Jérémie decided he was best served to stand and haul himself into the wagon. Any other way made it more likely the surgeon would spot him and protest. Or worse.

"Just help me up," he directed in an undertone. "To my feet, I mean."

"There is, I think, little danger of that," the surgeon remarked dryly, taking a roll of bandage linen from his bag and setting to work on Proulx's hands. He placed one of the small rolls of linen between two fingers and then bound it against one, wrapping the digit securely and continuing on to the next. He was less gentle than Madame Benveniste, but he was faster.

"Leave the lad alone," Margot retorted, "And you--" The no-nonsense tone of a mother crept into her voice as she turned on Proulx, "You should be saving your strength."

"I am merely defending your good name, Madame,"

"Ha! And what is that, I'd like to know."

*

Oh. Of course. Reaching down, Mathilde took hold of his good hand and pulled, bracing her feet and leaning back. Please, please don't let Monsieur Montreuil or her mother see...

Something like a cross between a hiss and a curse passed between Stéphane's lips and any thought of continuing the fledgling argument was driven straight from his head when the surgeon began bandaging his hands. The man was clearly a brute, in addition to being a foul-tongued swine.

Post  Jérémie Blanchard on Mon Jun 17, 2013 1:35 pm

Up. Up and on his feet. It was not the most comfortable of positions - in fact, his wounded leg immediately protested having any weight put on it - but standing meant he could drag himself into the wagon of his own power. Hopefully.

Just how he meant to actually accomplish this was, he quickly realised, not something he had given any thought to. Damn. He stood for a moment and regarded the vehicle, then decided it was most expedient to ignore the fact that he had but one good arm.

"Best not to look," Jérémie cautioned and took the few steps remaining between him and safety, reaching out with both hands for the back of the wagon. This would hurt but it wouldn't last long.

The baby's cries became wails and then screams, grating Marie-Eve's nerves as she tore and rolled the bandages.  But then something must have happened because his crying stopped in an instant.  Marie-Eve glanced around but she could not see from where she was sitting.  It must have been Mathilde, she realized.

"What's goin' on?" Foucheaux asked Blanchard, appearing around the side of the wagon.  The infant Rémy-Jean was in his arms, looking surprisingly comfortable.  "Here, Mathilde, maybe we should trade."

"Oh! Please!" Mathilde exclaimed gratefully, taking the child from his arms and turning anxiously to watch Jérémie. He was going to hurt himself again, even with Foucheaux's help, she just knew it!

*

Silence -- both from the child and the patient -- was a marked improvement as far as Montreuil was concerned. He finished bandaging the individual fingers on the second hand, and then proceeded to wrap the hand itself -- and the fingers all together, making certain that they were kept entirely straight -- so that the dressings resembled a pair of bulky, white mittens.

How, in the name of all things Holy, was he supposed to do anything with his hands like this? Even taking a piss would be impossible. The surgeon had to be out of his mind.

"How long before these are off?" Stéphane's only concern was getting the use of his hands back. The injuries to them were bad, he knew, but it was important to know how long he would effectively be a helpless cripple.

Re: 31st July, early morning; Walking wounded

Post  Jérémie Blanchard on Tue Jun 18, 2013 11:26 am

Oh no. That was not happening. Not while he was mostly capable enough to heave himself into the wagon unassisted. With this thought firmly in mind, Jérémie laid his palms flat on the wagon bed and pushed down, using the leverage to swing his wounded leg up first. Once the better part of his weight was over the edge of the wagon bed, it should be easy enough to crawl the rest of the way in without issue.

The process of doing so, however, put strain on his shoulders and he felt the by now familiar stab of pain in his left shoulder. He set his jaw, ignored the sensation of oozing warmth underneath the dressing, and hauled himself gracelessly into the wagon.

There.

A gasp escaped Mathilde, and then her face contracted into a fierce little frown. "I'm sorry, Marcel, could you take him again?" she asked, holding out Remy-Jean. She could only deal with one baby at a time.

How long? Stéphane grumbled a curse and shivered. A month. Sweet God, that was an eternity. "That's too long," he said, but was aware even as he said it that he was foolish to argue. What did he know about this, anyway? Except of course that he would need someone else's help with literally everything until his hands had mended enough for him to use them again.

Re: 31st July, early morning; Walking wounded

Post  Jérémie Blanchard on Wed Jun 19, 2013 1:15 am

It was only after he'd gotten himself safely back into the wagon that Jérémie realised his mistake, and of course by then it was too late to correct it. The wounds in his shoulder and arm had broken open again and, judging by the thunderous expression on Mathilde's face, that pain was undoubtedly the lesser of his immediate worries.

He was at least wise enough to refrain from protesting any innocence. Previous experiences had shown him the futility of that. Instead, he shifted himself far enough back in the wagon so he could not see Proulx or the surgeon. On the upside, his stomach had settled a little now. That counted for something. He was in no hurry to be actively sick. Things were bad enough as it was.

"I think he got left behind after the battle. His hands are burned and I think his leg is hurt too. This one, though—" She gave Foucheaux a look that said 'don't ask' and scrambled up into the back of the wagon.  "Take your shirt off," she told Jeremie.

"Left behind?" Foucheaux gasped.  "Maybe -!"  He hurried over to the man on the ground whom he now recognized as that grumpy sailor who had only recently joined their ranks.  What was his name?  Foucheax leaned over between the women, still holding the baby.  "Proulx!  What happened?  You been following us for three days?  Who else was with you?  Who did you see?"

His good sense of a moment before seemed to have already deserted him. Mathilde's demand was answered first by a very brief hesitation, then a shake of the head.

"No. I'm not hurt."

There probably were stupider things to say, but happily none came to mind.

What? The barrage of questions was unexpected and not a little unwelcome. It was bad enough having endured three days of hell - he could think of no better way to describe that period of time - after the battle, without being interrogated about them. Stéphane closed his eyes.

"I was alone. I don't recall seeing anyone."

It was not all the truth but he was of no mind to get into any of that.
