Character Info
Canon/Original? Original
First Name(s): Robert Du Bois
Surname: Du Bois
Nicknames:
Age: 52
Sex: Male
Place of Birth: Bretagne
Occupation: Sailing master
Family: Parents dead. He had two brothers who he hasn't seen in over twenty years.
Description: Robert is a typical kind of man one does not want to meet in a dark alley. He is not particularly tall, but a life-time on sea has given him enough time to compensate that. He has an impressive set of muscles, a loud voice that can reach the bow of the ship when standing on the quarter-deck, and an unforgiving nature when it comes to doing ones duty. His once dark-brown hair has gone into many different shades of grey and white, but he still wears it in his trademark three pigtails. Yet, nothing is more distinctive for this man then his left eye. No-one knows how and where he lost it, but so far nobody has dared to ask. Rumors have it he lost it in a meeting with pirates, others say he simply got into a fight.

His left-eye is not his only scare - Many more tiny scars have painted this Breton on his face and hands, and there are many more, and bigger ones, on his arms and torso. Yet, while some men take pride in showing their souvenirs of a fight as much as possible, Robert does not. He wears his naval blue coat, the collar and cuffs braided with gold to show his rank, as much as possible and with pride. It is not just a sign of rank, but in Robert eyes it is nothing short of a trophy, of almost four decades of service in the navy. His headdress is a simple black round hat with french cockade.
His coat and round hat are only worn during special occasions; At other times, he sports a typical Breton peasant hat, as shapeless as can be, and a double-breasted paletot - Naturally, with his rank distinction and the same amount of pride.

Strengths and Weaknesses:
Strenghts: - As a sailor, fighting is as natural to him as breathing.
- Being a petty officer for twenty and a sailing master for another ten, he knows more about sailing then the crew of a 120-gunner put together.
- While he might be a little aware of new people, he has a good nature and can be warm and friendly. Mind the word 'can', though.
- Being Breton, he can play the bagpipes, and his low voice actually gives him a powerful Bariton voice. You will first need to get him drunk in order to let him sing, though.

Weaknesses:
- Being 52 years old, his joints aren't what they used to be.
- His standard procedure when meeting new people is hostile. It takes a long time to earns this man trust, but when you do, you have it forever.
- Though it is not the business of a sailing master to directly order the men around, old habits die hard. This is sometimes frown upon by (petty) officers.
- He has lost his left eye and therefor it is more difficult for him to quickly focus on items, which also makes his reading somewhat slower.
Background: Du Bois and the sea can't be divided. He was born on it, he lives on it, and if he has it his way he will die on it. His father was a fisherman, and being born in a peasant family of Bretons, hard work is part of life. He sailed with his father and older brothers since the age of four, and ten years later, tired of the boredom of fishing, he ran away to Brest where he first mustered on a merchant. He spent the rest of his teenage years sailing between France and America, growing from a fishers-mans son to a sailor. In 1778, only twenty years old, he left the merchants fleet and joined the navy, to fight in the American war of Independence. He served on a a frigate, and he realized this was to be his profession - fighting for King and France on the freedom of the seas. He quickly rose in the ranks. Officers recognized potential in the Breton with his loud voice and unforgiving nature. He trained his men as if they were his sons, trusted them as if they were his fathers, and enjoyed their company as if they were his brothers. He knew he would never reach officer, but he had peace with that. He did what he loved, and even during the Revolution, he remained loyal to his officers and the king.

Nevertheless, he witnessed how the French sailors rebelled and destroyed their own navy from the inside - It was rotting. With disgust, he left in 1792, and once again joined the merchantsfleet. There he became sailing master, but he missed the thrill of battle. After only a few years he found himself under arms again; this time as part of a corsair sloop's crew, raiding east-India trade, until 1798, when the ship was wrecked on underwater cliffs - They were 'saved' by a British frigate, and remained prisoners of war until the peace. He served on a coastal trader for a few years until war once again broke out. Accordingly, he once again joined the navy (he was already aged 45 years old) and served a second-maitre on a 74-guns. Three years later, his ship was one of the lucky few who managed to flee back into Cadiz after the battle of Trafalgar.

Being forced to remain on land for the past four years, he volunteered without a second thought to serve as a sailing master on board a twenty gun sloop that was refitted for active duty. What did it matter he knew none of the crew or the officers? He would receive promotion, and more importantly; he would once again be on the sea again.
