Re: Die Feurigan Felder
Kaufmann was inclined to agree with him, though he scarcely wanted to say so. He would rather not risk another outburst and further halt their progress to camp. He would prefer to dump their prisoners on someone else's hands as soon as possible and have done with them altogether.
Schwol caught him looking at the little medallion he had pulled off of the boy. "What's that?" the rifleman asked, suspicious of unshared fortune.
"Just a trinket that was around his neck. Came off with his crossbelts." Kaufmann stuffed it into his bread bag.
"Lemme see!"
"No."

"What sort of trinket?" asked Mittelstaedt eagerly. "Is it gold?"

Re: Die Feurigan Felder
Mittelstaedt opened his mouth press the question further, then subsided with a huff. There was no getting anything out of Kaufmann once he'd set his mind against it.
"Looks like they're stowing 'em over there," Brugmann remarked, and sure enough, up ahead was a cluster of blue uniformed figures. Amid the comforting, almost repetitive familiarity of everything else the color stood out starkly.

Re: Die Feurigan Felder
"About bloody time," Schwol said. "I'm ready to drop."
"Be a while before that can happen," Kaufmann said. "With all them dead and wounded. Work for us all, probably." He suddenly envied those blue-coated men who were sitting or lying on the ground, their work finished for the day, and for the rest of the war. But no, he would not truly want to be in that position.
There was a redcoated officer standing nearby with a few of his men. Kaufmann assumed (and hoped) he was in charge of the prisoners. He approached and saluted, then realized he was not sure what to say in English. "Two French soldiers, sir," he managed, pointing at the group behind him.
