"Oh, don't misunderstand me - I will certainly take all that is on offer and might even inconvenience myself to get some more, but i will not allow myself to grow dependend on it."

Edward looked at the peels, then deliberately tossed them into the next planter.

"How positively callous," George smirked and stood up. "Come, or we will be late for the second half and you can depend upon that."

"Self-preserving!", Torrington corrected gently, standing and brushing down his trousers.

"To become calloused, it needs discomfort first - I think you know that."

"I won't deny that, no, but I suppose I can't help getting attached to people. I've always did live dangerously." He took Torrington's arm. "I just hope one day you might prefer danger over self-preservation."

Edward shrugged lightly.

"I might. Sometimes fighting and suffering for something is more worth than self-preservation, they say ... and they must be right, for why else should we be here, risking French bullets and Spanish mosquitos every day?"

Just as the bell rang to announce the beginning of the second part, they retook their seat - only to have to stand up again when a haughty matron and her rather portly husband belatedly came to claim their seat in the middle of the row. While they at least perfunctorily apologized to the Spanish guests, they ignored the two officers completely, brushing past them.

About midway through the second act, George got distracted from the plot by somebody's coughing fit and became fidgety, looking around at his surroundings. Then directing his attention to the stage again, he quickly and as stealthily as possible pinched the side of Torrington's leg just above the knee.

Edward involuntarily kicked out a bit, and the textbook and pencil nearly clattered to the floor. Startled, the engineer hissed softly: "What was that for?"

"Are you bored or does this signify your wish to get up and attend to a human necessity?"

"Nothing of any importance, I presume ..."
Edward rubbed his knee one last time, and opened up the book again.

"Only some little beast just tormented me a bit. I will slap it, when I can conveniently do so ... before it can sting me again."

This time the engineer was had tter prepared. He had been waiting, obviously. His hand dropped down to rap the other over the knuckles with his pencil.

"I assume your parson persona has failed to memorize some effective prayers against these buggers?"

"My reaction should be proof that I am not ..."

He pulled a handkerchief out of his pocket, dipped it into Hunter's abandoned glass of water and wrapped it around the hand.

"There ... or do you want me to kiss it better as well?"

The last came very quietly, because several eyes were beginning to turn into their direction, but the amused sarcasm was unmistakable nevertheless.

Edward answered it with a haugthily raised brow, then returned his attention back to the stage.

When the play was over, he clapped, then rose, and began to draw Hunter into a conversation about the historical accuracy of the performance while leading him towards the exit.

The discussion had been rather quiet, but when they crossed infront of their host, Torrington suddenly protested loudly:

"No, no, my dear Hunter. The handkiss of that period should have been performed like this!"

And with an air and elegance that would have made his grandfather, who in his youth had been a one of the beaus of the court of Versailles, proud, he bend, appropriated Hunter's hand, and delivered a perfect kiss there.

Hunter didn't bat an eyelid. Instead, looking round at their host, he enquired: "Do you think that was accurate? Personally, I think he deserves a historical slap on the face. A lady should be the first to offer her hand, not have it seized." He looked at Torrington again: "Shall we try again for the sake of history?" He offered his hand to Torrington again.

"Ah, you must forgive me - I was trying to portray a man full of all the most fervent passions for his partner. But if you think this approach to be faulty in this case, we will of course try again. this time, you will please remember to curtsy, not to deep and not too shallow, and to wait till I raise you!"

Edward's mouth quivered, but he adopted a courtier's stance again, then with a graceful gesture that evoked the memory of opulent lace cuffs, took Hunter's offered hand and bowed over it.

According to Torrington's words, Hunter curtsied and stayed in that position, waiting for Torrington to raise him. He felt very jealous of ladies with their long skirts, convinced that he must look ridiculous to onlookers.

With all the formality of a king greeting his queen, Edward brushed his lips just over Hunter's gloves without actually touching them, then with another graceful gesture raised 'her' again and turned them both so that they could stroll now.

"Very creditable ... you were born for the stage, my friend. But I fear you might have lost your bet."
