Re: Plague of frogs
"Children? Dangerous?" The idea seemed to be a bit beyond Gareth's grasp. "I think you've been at sea too long, my good man. There is nothing to fear from children, not even French ones."
But by talking to Deverel, he had not noticed the vase being thrown their way by the Frenchman. However, he did notice when it hit the wall nearby, shattering into pieces and spraying water over him.
"See, those knaves are the ones we need to concern ourselves with! They're so desperate that they're attacking with flowers! Flowers, for God's sake!"

Re: Plague of frogs
"Indeed, brother, for once you are correct," said Samuel, still smarting over the affront to his wardrobe. Thankfully he had seen the incoming vase and had stepped far enough away so as to avoid getting drenched.
But now another Frenchman had come up to them and was making some sort of gesticulation. Samuel blinked in confusion at the man's attempt to communicate. Was he telling them to cease their attack? A typical French response, then.
"We...will...do...what...we...wish," he responded, speaking each word long and slow so that the message might sink in better. In case it had not, he added more harshly, "You will not tell us what to do, you spineless fool!"

Re: Plague of frogs
It was probably quite foolish to fight with these men, even though one of them was just a civilian. The redcoated fellow had an actual sword. But Daubigny had just about had enough of this place, and enough of being ordered about by fools. He had no weapon, but there were plenty of chairs! He swung one against the floor, intending to break off a leg to use as a club, but the blasted thing refused to cooperate. What was the matter with these chairs? He realized belatedly that the frame was not just gilded wood, but it actually seemed to be made of brass.
"Get out of here!" he snarled in French, pointing the chair legs at the civilian. "This is French territory now and I won't see you harm these children. Get out!" Even as he spoke, he wondered what the hell he was thinking. He cared nothing for the children, but his mouth was running away on its own.
Behind him, the school group laughed and cheered, some of them throwing food.

Re: Plague of frogs
Samuel raised an eyebrow. The Frenchman was actually threatening him with a chair. This really would not be much of a battle. At least he was speaking more coherently now in his own language, which Samuel happened to speak rather well. Obviously the silly Frog had thought that they were all ignorants who did not speak French. Well, perhaps the navy officer could not; Samuel knew nothing about the man and thus could not say. As for Gareth, Samuel knew his brother had been taught French but whether the lessons had ever sunk in was a matter of debate. So perhaps he would have to get the message through himself.
"French territory? A dining room?" he sneered in French, "Surely you do jest, sir. But if you insist on fighting, I will be more than glad to oblige."
He pointed his fireplace poker directly at the Frenchman, hopefully demonstrating that he was not to be trifled with.

Re: Plague of frogs
The man spoke French! For some reason, this gave Charcot the confidence to ask, even in front of an officer, "What the hell is goin' on here?" (The man in the robe was only a naval officer, after all.)

Re: Plague of frogs
Deverel gave his Francophone countryman a quick glance. "What do they have to say for themselves?"
Re: Plague of frogs
"Good heavens!" exclaimed a young woman with russet hair and a less than respectable neckline. She had skirted the three gentlemen and now regarded the scene with an expression which bespoke dignified alarm, though her voice, when she spoke again, was edged with laughter.
"Children armed with cutlery. How terrifying!"

Re: Plague of frogs
"That fool is trying to claim this dining room for his country," Samuel told Deverel, nodding at the Frenchman with the chair, "Though he may be the only one trying to make such a claim, for the others seem to be unaware of what's transpiring. At least that one is." He gestured in the direction of the soldier who had asked what was going on.
The sudden appearance of the woman gave him pause, but she did not appear to be the sort of lady who would be worth his attention. Besides, he was much too irritated at those blasted Frogs at the moment.

Re: Plague of frogs
Samuel may not have had any interest in the woman, but Gareth on the other hand would never look a gift horse--or a lady--in the mouth. Her arrival had caught his attention at once, and he quickly hastened over to her.
"Have no fear, miss. We will see these French interlopers off!" he said, brandishing his sword in an exaggeratedly heroic manner. "You had best get behind us. I would not want you to run afoul of any of these rogues!"

Re: Plague of frogs
Janet gave the officer a coy smile, but rather than retreating, she slipped past him to perch on the edge of the dining table.
"French?" she gasped, looking over her shoulder to see for herself – she caught a glimpse of ginger hair and winked – before turning back to the redcoat, her hand fluttering to her breast. "Why, sir! You can't mean that you intend to fight them with only three of you? Surely it would be more prudent to withdraw, call for reinforcements? Artillery perhaps?"

Charcot stared at the newcomer and then jabbed his mate in the ribs with his elbow. "Roux! It's that woman there! Look, ain't it that woman?"

Re: Plague of frogs
"What is this?"
The question came from a young man in a dirty wool serge uniform, who was peering cautiously at the room's occupants. He was laden with a pack and webbing, with a rifle slung from his right shoulder. The liberal spattering of mud on his uniform made it seem as though he'd been rolling on the ground.

Re: Plague of frogs
Deverel grinned at the sight of the woman with coppery hair. A pretty wench for sure. He would be glad to defeat the French rabble with her as an audience. "We can manage 'em, my girl. Never fear."
Re: Plague of frogs
Food? This got his attention, distracting him away from staring at the madmen who were brandishing fire pokers.
"Scran?" The idea that this place had 'plenty to eat' seemed too fantastic to believe. He was therefore resolved to see it before he'd give the woman's statement any credence.
Then he glanced at the fellow in the strange blue coat. "Manage who?"
This was all so damned strange!

Re: Plague of frogs
Janet gave him a reassuring smile and gestured to the platters of food on the table behind her. Poor child looked as though he hadn't had a decent meal in quite a while. Or a decent night's sleep, for that matter.

Re: Plague of frogs
Deverel scowled indignantly. "Now is no time for eating!" he told the new lad, who looked to be wearing some sort of uniform. Deverel didn't care whether it was the uniform for postal service or the Methodist mission society, as long as the young man could hold a weapon. "Arm yourself and help us clear this French rabble out!"
Re: Plague of frogs
"Food? Eat? Eat food?" Foucheaux had followed his nose and he now stood dripping in the doorway, ignoring for the moment the strangeness of the spectacle before him. There was another man in a white robe like Paol's and Rosy's, so that was a bit reassuring, even if the man was brandishing a chair. This was obviously a mess hall, and he had recognized two most important English words. "Food, eat?" he repeated hopefully, looking piteously at the woman whose voice he had heard.

Re: Plague of frogs
The woman pointed out a table laden with food, which looked like a feast fit for officers. Was it really free for everyone to partake of? Barton wasn't sure he believed it. Then the man in the strange long blue coat spoke up.
"The French? They aren't the enemy, nor a rabble." Certainly not a rabble, from what Barton had seen of them. Frowning slightly, Barton glanced at the Frenchman who was pleading for food. "That table there, monsieur. It is for everyone," he said in French.

Re: Plague of frogs
Foucheaux stared wide-eyed at the strange Englishman and drew in a long breath. "Thank you," he said, eyes shining. And then he immediately turned to devour a pork pie.

Re: Plague of frogs
However confused his views on the French, the boy's last remark was, as far as Janet was concerned, the first sensible statement she'd heard all evening. "What's your name, love?"

Re: Plague of frogs
"You're welcome," Barton told the man. He was not yet prepared to tempt fate by helping himself to the food, but that moment was coming fast. An empty stomach was a powerful motivator, after all. He shifted his rifle sling higher up on his shoulder, then reached up to tip his steel helmet back a little on his head.
"My name's William, Miss. And yours?"

Re: Plague of frogs
"The French are not the enemy?" Gareth was staring agog at the strange Englishman--if an Englishman he was. His odd dress was one thing, but his comment was absolutely intolerable. "What sort of Englishman are you? Only a filthy traitor would say such a thing!"
Re: Plague of frogs
"Perhaps he is," Samuel remarked, wrinkling his nose in derision at the man's foul-looking, dirty clothes. Whether he was a traitor or not was a matter for debate, but his sense of fashion--or lack thereof--was a much more heinous crime. "No true Englishman would invite these French peasants to share his table."
Re: Plague of frogs
Deverel was beginning to feel confused, or perhaps it was merely lightheadedness from being wounded earlier. "Something strange is going on," he said, lowering his fire poker a bit.
The man in the white robe watched him and marginally lowered his chair as well. The blasted thing was getting heavy.
