Plague of frogs

Post  Jack Deverel on Sun Aug 19, 2012 3:44 pm

A disheveled Deverel burst into the lounge.

"The dining cabin's been taken by the French!" he exclaimed.

Re: Plague of frogs

Post  Gareth Woodmarsh on Mon Aug 20, 2012 8:27 am

The Woodmarsh brothers had been calmly--well, calmly for them, that is--enjoying drinks when Deverel burst in with his startling announcement. Gareth was on his feet at once, though not so quickly as to spill his drink.

"Taken by the French? Zounds! When did this happen, man? By God, we'll teach them to intrude on us here!" he exclaimed. What a revolting development. How dare those French intrude on this fine place where they had sought rest and relaxation. Even so, Gareth, as was his wont, was not quite keen on leaping into battle of any sort. Stealing at glance at his brother, he told Deverel, "How fortunate that my brother has just been telling me how much he would like to go and fight the French. Surely he will be more than eager to assist you."

Re: Plague of frogs

Post  Samuel Woodmarsh on Mon Aug 20, 2012 8:40 am

Samuel had not gotten to his feet upon hearing Deverel's announcement, but upon hearing his brother's last comment, he did.

"My dear brother, as much as I would love to show those French blighters what for, regrettably I am not in the King's Service," he said, giving Gareth a smug smile. Being well aware of his brother's penchant for avoiding battle, he made a point to add, "Such fighting should be done by an experienced officer."

"Nonsense, man! It's a job for every Englishman! King and glory, eh? Arm yourselves!" He seized a poker from beside the fireplace and swished it experimentally.

Re: Plague of frogs

Post  Samuel Woodmarsh on Wed Aug 22, 2012 3:22 pm

King and glory? Samuel tried not to laugh derisively. Glory was all well and good, but preferably not at the risk of injury to himself. But then, perhaps if he agreed to help "fight off" these French interlopers--and persuaded Gareth to do the same--he could let his brother and this naval officer do the real fighting and then he could brag about his own involvement later on.

"Well, if it is a matter of such high honour, then naturally I would be most glad to assist you, my good man," Samuel said, nodding to Deverel. Walking over to the fireplace, he drew another poker and examined it. "I suppose it will just be you and I, sir, since my brother seems sadly reluctant to partake in a share of glory."

Re: Plague of frogs

Post  Gareth Woodmarsh on Wed Aug 22, 2012 3:36 pm

Samuel's words had the right effect. Furious to think that his younger brother would be enjoying any sort of glory without him suddenly made Gareth rather more eager to join in this endeavour. Besides, he always had a knack for dodging battle. He could easily let Samuel and the naval officer do the fighting and then subsequently take credit for the victory.

"Hmm, now that I think about it, a plan of action is rather a good idea!" he exclaimed, drawing his sword, "Come on then, let's give those Frenchies a darn good thrashing!"

Re: Plague of frogs

Post  Nicolas Daubigny on Mon Aug 27, 2012 6:20 am

Daubigny had followed the sound of laughter and conversation and the smell of hot food, and he was pleased to find himself in a dining room full of French speakers! Granted, they were practically children, but French children were better than English adults. The boys looked like they might be the age of some of the midshipman from the Néréide. He addressed one of them.

"You there, my good lad. What is this place and what are you doing here?"

The boy and his friends simply laughed at him. Perhaps they did not recognize that he was a naval officer because he was still wearing that white soft robe. He was about to give them a stern rebuke when a girl at another table answered him. "We're on a school trip to see the castle."

School trip? Castle? What?

Re: Plague of frogs

Post  Polly Smith on Mon Aug 27, 2012 2:02 pm

Polly wandered through the strange building, eyes wide. She had never seen a place such as this. Still, she could hear the sound of voices and decided that her best course of action would be to follow them and find someone who knew what was going on. This lead her to a large room, filled with oddly dressed people (including a man in a robe of all things). All of them were speaking French.

Polly let out a frightened squeak. Not more Frenchmen.

Charcot heard a squeak nearby, and he looked up from his table of school children who had accepted him into their midst. "Flower mouse!" he cried with joy, recognizing the young English girl.

The sound of someone shouting nearby caught Polly's attention, and she looked around in concern. Surely the French were prone to fighting. She had seen evidence of that already, and had no desire to be caught anywhere near it.

The children were looking at her now, and they giggled. "Flower mouse! Flower mouse!" they repeated, until an irritable woman hushed them.

"Flower mouse! Remember me?" Charcot said, catching hold of her arm lightly. "Roux, look who it is! It's my girl, remember?"

Polly froze as the Frenchman grabbed her arm, then pulled away sharply.

"No!" she said, recognizing him. He had been in the French camp, and had seemed very nice at first. Polly wasn't one to be fooled twice. "Ye're no' nice."

At the table, another French soldier stood up, frowning.

"Maybe you should let the lass alone," Roux said. "Again.."

With shrinking hesitation Mathilde reached out and plucked at the older girl's sleeve, tugging her towards the center of the crowd of children. Crowds were the safest places.

Surprised, Polly let herself be led away. Especially as it took her away from the French soldier. She smiled at the girl.

"Thank ye."

"Unhand that young woman!" Deverel cried rather belatedly, pointing his fire poker at the scruffy lad who had just relinquished the girl.

Charcot reflexively took a step back and cast an anxious glance towards Roux. Fine time to be caught without a musket or bayonet! He seized the only weapons close at hand, a set of stainless steel cutlery.

Re: Plague of frogs

Post  Gareth Woodmarsh on Wed Aug 29, 2012 8:18 am

The Brothers Woodmarsh came barging up right on Deverel's heels. Contrary to the lieutenant's outburst, Gareth did not see any young lady being manhandled, but he certainly saw the Frenchmen. And the fact that they seemed to have only cutlery as weapons made him feel much better about jumping into a fight. After all, who could possibly be frightened of a man wielding cutlery?

"How dare you profane this place with your presence, you vermin!" he snapped, brandishing his sword at them, "Are you so dishonourable as to attack children?"

Re: Plague of frogs

Post  Samuel Woodmarsh on Wed Aug 29, 2012 8:29 am

Samuel did not particularly care for coming to the defence of a group of children, and he somehow doubted that his brother did either. Nevertheless, he needed to put on a good show as well, lest Gareth upstage him with his infuriating tendency to be bombastic.

"Perhaps they are too timid to fight against real men," he remarked, offering the Frenchmen a condescending shake of his head.

Roux exchanged glances with Charcot as even more Englishmen came barreling in. He wasn't sure what they were saying, but he certainly did not like their tone. Plus, they were outnumbered in a room full of children.

"Better get ready," he muttered to Charcot.

Then, he threw his fork at the Englishman who was shaking his head, and scrabbled at his belt to grab his bayonet.

Re: Plague of frogs

Post  Samuel Woodmarsh on Wed Aug 29, 2012 9:26 am

Having not anticipated an immediate retaliation, much less one involving thrown cutlery, Samuel only just managed to step aside as the Frenchman threw a fork at him. Even so, the utensil scraped his arm, putting a barely noticeable scratch on his immaculately tailored coat. But in Samuel's mind, that was a terrible offence.

"You blasted cur, you'll pay for that!" he hissed, though he most likely meant more in the monetary sense than the physical one. Still, the Frenchman was making a move for a more substantial weapon now, which meant that proper fighting was imminent. So Samuel hefted his poker and adopted a more defensive stance.

The man's reaction startled Roux. He had barely even hit him!

"Better be careful," he told Charcot, holding up his bayonet. "I think they might be crazy. Well, crazier than the English usually are.

Post  Jack Deverel on Fri Aug 31, 2012 1:53 pm

The school group began to babble excitedly.

"He's not attacking the children," Deverel cried to the redcoated soldier. "The children are French too, and probably dangerous!"

He stepped to the side as a young man threw some cutlery, but the only damage done was to the English civilian's coat.

"You've got your bayonet?" Charcot gasped, sparing Roux a glance as he looked around for another weapon. "How come I don't have a bayonet?" He seized a vase of flowers and threw it in the direction of the English invaders.

Re: Plague of frogs

Post  Nicolas Daubigny on Fri Aug 31, 2012 2:08 pm

A rather pretty young woman who seemed to be in charge of the children had been speaking to Daubigny, reprimanding him for his lack of decorum by appearing in a public with only a robe on. But now this interruption! Bloody English!

"What the devil is going on here?" he cried, striding forward to meet his adversaries, for adversaries they were, dressed in British naval and army uniforms. He switched to speaking English. "WHAT YOU DO! NO!" He held up a forbidding finger and waved it in a wide, angry arc.
