Canon/Original:original
First Name(s):Casper
Surname:Duuring
Nicknames:
Age:19
Sex:Male
Place of Birth:The Netherlands, Amsterdam.
Occupation:Corporal-fusilier
Family:Both his parents are still alive, aged 42 and 43. He has two younger sisters, Katherina, aged 11 and Julia aged 14 and a younger brother, aged 8. His father is a teacher of wealthy children, and so the family has managed to live well of the money of proud parents.
Description:Though he was a weak and small child, a proper raising has strengthen him. He's 172 cm(Which is about 5,5 foot) tall, has blond hair and very clear blue eyes. He is not considered very handsome, as his face is quite angular and a bit hollow. Some folk say he looks like a Russian, whatever they look like.
As a son of a teacher, he can read, write, and even speaks English and a bit German. He also knows some passable French, mostly learned from his time in the army. He considers himself educated, though most proper educated man won't agree.
Strengths and Weaknesses:
-As with most Dutchmen, Duuring has a clear mind and a clear view on things. 'Hollandse nuchterheid', they call it. It comes in handy when there are decisions to be made, as far a corporal must do that.
-He's easy-going and friendly, and likes almost all people. He's a honest person, and respects people
-Physically quite strong and a quick reloader, he's a good soldier in the eyes of his officers. His kit is always as best looking as possible.
-Also, being Dutch, he can be considered quite greedy. He doesn't spend his money much and if he does, only with things he really need. This sometimes annoys people, for he will never buy you a drink and lend money or any of his things.
-A bad memory may be his other curse. He only remembers things he really likes. Persons and other things are quickly forgotten, so he has a little notebook, bought in Madrid, most of the time hidden in his shako, where he writes things down he will otherwise forget.
-He sometimes stumbles over his words, partly because he's shy, partly because...well, he just stumbles. He can't be considered charismatic.
Background:His parents, middle-class people, raised him as best as they could. He became home-educated and his father hoped he would become a rich merchant. Alas, the Dutch golden age had ended many years before and the French revolution changed his fate forever. In 1795, the French marched into the republic, which became the Batavian republic. Only 5 years old, he can still remember the happiness of all the people and the parade when the French troops marched into Amsterdam. In 1806, Napoleon Boneparte, some corsican dwarf who crowned himself emperor, as he was sometimes called in newspapers, put his brother on the trone, with orders to re-organize the army.
Born in 1790, he would have been drafted into the Dutch army, had he not volunteered a few days before his 18th birthday. By volunteering, his parents were given a small sum and, being educated and fast thinking, he was quickly promoted to Corporal in nummer 2 companie, 1ste bataljon, 2de regiment infantrie. Only a small number of men had been in the army for more then 2 years. Most were, like him, new recruits. He carries his white coat with blue facings with much pride, and he was nothing but joy when the battalion was ordered to the Peninsula, under General Chassés brigade. After marching trough all of bloody Franch and Spain, he wasn't sure he still enjoyed war as much as he used to.
Still, he takes lives as it comes. He hopes to return to his home a veteran, maybe even a sergeant. He has been in a few battles, but it was mostly firing volleys into a half-defeated enemy. His unit was at Durango, but he was sick there, and at Mesa de Ibor and Ciudad-Real, but that was mostly firing volleys into a half defeated Spanish army. After that, the 2de has been moved to Merida, where it has stayed for a few weeks. Now, it was marching again. He has never seen a British soldier, but they were supposed to be the best. They shall see.
Anything Else:Being Dutch, the French like to mock them. This might give eehm...intresting situtions?
Writing Sample/Past Roleplay:
The clear voice of the Sergeant-major flew trough the ranks: "BATTALION! ROMPEEEEZ....vos ranques!". Instantaneously, 800 rank and file shouted "Vive le Roi!", after which they broke ranks. Le roi. King Louis of Holland, brother of Napoleon. Casper had only seen the man once, at a parade. He didn't look very French, nor dutch, nor king-like, but he was considered a good king. Not that most soldiers really cared now, being hundreds of miles away from the homes.
Most of these none-caring soldiers were now sitting under the shade of some dried-out trees. This blasted country was a hot place, and many had untied their jackets and tore off their shako's, and were drinking out of their canteens.
Casper sought a good spot, laid his musket against a small tree and threw off his cow-hide pack. He was also very thirsty, but only took a sip, for they had been warned they would need their water. Not all men had been following this advice, and so he looked at a small group of privates going around, begging for a bit of water. He smiled, though he did not knew why. He closed his eyes. Suddenly he felt a kick in his side, and he opened his eyes and he would have start shouting against whoever did that, had it not been a sergeant. "Come on, stand up, corporal. We won't wait for you. Close your eyes now and I'll write you down as a deserter!" The sergeants smile was almost toothless, but it had a aura of friendliness. Sergeant Kuiper was a fair man, a religious one, and there was not a single unhappy men under this command. Well, there were off course unhappy men, but it had nothing to do with Kuiper.
Duuring stood up, did his knapsack back on and placed his musket against his soldiers as he marched back into the marching column. There was another 50-minutes march to do, and so the sergeant-majors voice was heard again. "BATTALION! ....AN AVAAANT......MAAAAARCHE!"
