Relaxing in the Crown
Burke peeked into the main room of the Crown. It certainly was an odd place, but it was always nice to end up there! One never knew what, or who, they were going to find. The room seemed empty at the moment, though.
"Hello the house!" he called. "Anyone in?"
There was no answer, but he shrugged and moved further into the room anyway. Burke flopped into one of the chairs by the fire and sighed contentedly. Comfortable, indeed.

Re: Relaxing in the Crown
Curled up on the ground, to the left of the chair and in part concealed under the table, was a green coated form. Not snoring or making much of a sound but for the calm breathing of a man fast asleep. The shako lay a couple of paces to the lad's left, tipped over.
He was snuggling his rifle, the barrel of which rested against his cheek. Some dust came to tickle at his nose - perhaps disturbed by the new arrival's unceremonious flop. He sneezed, rubbed at his nose and nuzzled his rifle , rather contently.

Re: Relaxing in the Crown
The sound of a sneeze was loud in the quiet room and Burke jumped, startled. Looking around, he noticed Pye sleeping under the table. Certainly a strange place for someone to go to sleep.
"Oi!" he said, nudging the boy with his foot. "What're ye doin' under there?"

Re: Relaxing in the Crown
Pye stirred and mumbled something rather nondescript at the offending sound and touch. He rubbed his nose with his hand then with an unhappy huff, forced one of his eyes open. He made as little effort as he could, to see who it was that thought it right to jab at his ribs. "..I'm lookin' fer t' Frogs wot else." He mumbled and stretched. Left arm first, then right, careful not to have the rifle slip and thump against the ground.
"Wot're ye doing up there then?"

Re: Relaxing in the Crown
"I think ye're safe from Frogs unner that table, lad," Burke said with a grin. "Not much room down there."
He moved back to give Pye more room to come back out, settling back into the chair he had claimed before.
"Me?" he asked, shrugging. "Just sittin' 'ere, me. Nice place t' be."

Re: Relaxing in the Crown
"..I ain't hidin'. I's lookin' for em!" He crawled from under the table and stretched one more time before sitting himself up, blinking a couple of times. "How long've you been 'ere?" He scratched the back of his head, plucking some grass from his hair. How did that get there?
"When'd you get 'ere? "He glanced at his coat and scowled." S' that your dirty footprint on me side?"

Re: Relaxing in the Crown
"Like as not," Burke replied cheerfully. "Needed some way t' wake ye."
He shifted to a more comfortable position in his chair, soaking up the warmth from the fire. A nice spot of tea would make the place perfect. Or, maybe, something a bit stronger.
"Just came in a couple o' minutes ago," he said. "Surprised ye didn' hear me - called right loud, so I did."

Re: Relaxing in the Crown
"Least you could'a wiped yer shoes when yer came in. An not on me coat either!" He must have overslept, which did annoy the young rifleman a little. It suggested being caught of guard, it further suggested that an enemy could easily have snuck past him, while he would have been merrily in his world of dreams. Not something one was willing to admit to.
"I heard yer a'right. Jus' didn't think t'was needed fer me to get up for such a loud mouth." He stood and stepped up to the lad. "Now, clean this'un up. You caused it." He indicated the dirty part on his coat and grinned.

Re: Relaxing in the Crown
"Ye shouldn't 'ave faked bein' a doormat, then," Burke retorted. He gave a cheeky grin. "Can't clean ye without water, either. Guess ye'll just 'ave to be dirty."
Glancing around the room, he commented: "Fair quiet here tonight."

Re: Relaxing in the Crown
"Hmm. " Cheeky bugger. "Only fair if we're even then." He reached out to take hold of Burke's wrist. "N'less you're 'fraid t' get dirty?" The invitation was clear, perhaps almost more an order than a request.
He did look about in hesitation then and nodded. "s' night. I guess mos' have gone t' sleep. If'n they are here at all. There's plenny of spare rooms upstairs. So they say. Ain't gone to see if it's true." He could have gone off and slept there, the daft boy!

Re: Relaxing in the Crown
"Ain't afraid o' some dirt!" Burke said, affronted. What did he look like, a lass? "Just don't feel like cleanin' yer jacket, so I don't."
Re: Relaxing in the Crown
"Sure. Easy ter say that, ain't it." Pye smirked at Burke. "Missus." He added with a bow fit for a king.. only he nearly toppled over with it at the end.
"If you will 'scuse me." There was something he needed fetching and needed to do now. Silly as it was, and improper as the choice of place would be.. it just had to be done! It had been wet enough outside for it.
He had not waited for Burke's response, when he started for the door. He'd only paused enough to fetch a bucket, and then he was out the door.

Re: Relaxing in the Crown
Burke stared after Pye's hasty exit. It certainly did not seem like it would bode well for him. Beating his own quick retreat suddenly seemed like a good idea.
Re: Relaxing in the Crown
Pye returned, but this time the bucket appeared either not there, or perhaps it was that large mass that was hidden behind the lad as he walked.
He approached the elder rifleman, smiling all too kindly. " Hope I didn't take long t' ye?"

Re: Relaxing in the Crown
"Not at all," Burke said with a wary grin, backing towards the door towards the upstairs rooms. "But, seems like a good time t' call it a night, so it does."
Re: Relaxing in the Crown
"..Oh is it? let me help you upstairs then. I know where t' thing is that makes rooms lit like it was day. An' I know which o' t' rooms are empty so's you don't wake up any of t' officers." Pye smiled innocently, taking small steps towards Burke while he spoke. "Be better you turn 'bout afore you trip and land on your arse."
Re: Relaxing in the Crown
Like hell he would. Burke was no fool.
He grinned cheekily at Pye. "Bring yer hands from behind yer back, and then ye can show me."
He grinned cheekily at Pye. "Bring yer hands from behind yer back, and then ye can show me."
Re: Relaxing in the Crown
"Don' ye say yer didn't ask fer it." Pye murmured very quietly and made a sudden move forward, both his hands following suit. One had gripped at the bucket's top, the other held onto it's bottom end to make the aim more true and then with a sudden jerk the whole of the thing's contents went flying at the other rifleman. There was a thick slush of mud, liquid and dirt, all airborn by that time.
Re: Relaxing in the Crown
Burke tried to duck, but still got completely splattered with mud. It dripped down his hair, across his face and onto his jacket. He stared at the mess with dismay, and rubbed ineffectually at his eyes. Scraping a handful of muck off of himself, he sent a glare at Pye's grinning face.
"Ye asked fer this, lad!" he said, smirking, and threw the mud at Pye.

Re: Relaxing in the Crown
"Ack!" Though Pye had wanted to duck out of the way, he was too slow. He had not expected Burke to retaliate so soon! The muck hit him straight across the chest, a few bits deflecting from his coat and splattering what they could reach behind him.
"Oy!" He stared at his coat briefly. First dirtied by a foot print, now by a splat of mud! He reached into the bucket for what mud had not parted from it and curled his fingers around a hefty, spongy ball of wet and dirt.
Releasing the bucket he ran at the elder rifleman, with the intent to have that ball of filth shoved down the lad's collar. This was getting dirtier by the minute... the floors, themselves. Somebody would have to wash up later! "You started it!"

Re: Relaxing in the Crown
"Not this much muck I didn't!" Burke protested.
He ducked out of Pye's way, aiming to get behind him and close to the bucket. It was never wise to be the unarmed one in a battle!

Re: Relaxing in the Crown
Pye misjudged the distance, and with the ground somewhat slippery where Burke had just stood, he had to slide before he could turn about to follow after the other rifleman. "Yer wiped yer shoes on me coat, you sure did!" He cursed when he saw that Burke was nearly at the bucket, which was full enough with some remaining mud. It had enough 'firepower' to make Pye's own self very muddy indeed.
He made a dive for the other lad, trying to tackle him away from the bucket before it was too late! "No you don't!"

Re: Relaxing in the Crown
"Oof!"
Burke was surprised as Pye collided with him. Both Riflemen went tumbling to the ground, knocking the bucket over as they landed. The remaining mud spattered out across the floor.
"Blast," muttered Burke, staring at the mess in dismay. They were bound to get in trouble for this. Still, as long as everything was already filthy...
He grabbed another handful of mud from the floor and rubbed it into Pye's hair.

Re: Relaxing in the Crown
With the added substance Pye's hair appeared to take a stand of it's own, sticking at odd ends just in the shape it was rubbed into. He huffed and straddled Burke, shoving his handfull of mud against his collar trying to shove it down further to reach not only the first, but the second layer of clothing as well.
"M' got t' upper hand now, boy"" He exclaimed with a set of chuckles, not caring for the muddy floors as much as his fellow rifleman.

Re: Relaxing in the Crown
"'Ere now!" Burke protested, trying to squirm away. The mud was cold and slimy and he did not particularly relish the feel of it in his shirt.
