"Greetings." The Portuguese woman inclined her chin a little in a very short nod. "The land is quite beautiful enough to loose oneself in it." She said lightly, her tone neither mocking nor teasing. It was something of a fact to her, even if the land could be equally barren, hot, unforgiving.

She nudged her mare into motion again, glancing over her shoulder to see that the officers were following, and so also the Hussars.

Vickery felt a little like a boy again, chastised by his mother, and didn't quite dare to look across at Torrington in case he laughed inappropriately.

It certainly was a beautiful country, though, if somewhat bleak and barren. It would not be an easy land for the peasants to scratch out a living in, though, Vickery felt.

"Peccavimus, senhora," he said quietly. We have sinned... Indeed they had. There really was no excuse for behaving so... irresponsibly, even though it had been fun to cast responsibilities and cares aside.

Maybe they could do it again, one day, when their duties permitted?

"What did he say?" Kenley whipered to his friend. Willoughby looked amused and leaned closer to his friend to explain it. Kenley blinked at first then when it downed on him he chuckled. He had to cover his mouth not to make it any louder.

Even officers admitted they had done wrong sometimes. It was only that they did this to the ladies instead of their men. "He patted Herrero on the side of his neck then averted his gaze to the left of them. He had thought he saw movement, but as he looked again, there was nothing. Kenley tensed at almost the same time. But he too had lost sight of what he believed to be human.

"We are not far." Estefania seemed unperturbed. " Perhaps two distinct turns on our path ahead of us.. and we should be right at the bridge." She looked.. amused.

"Should you need to, sir, follow the sound of the river. The going might be rougher than this path, but you will certainly find it." That was, suggesting, that if the two men wished to race each other again. The corner of her lip was curved ever so slightly in a subtle, but no less amused, smile.

"I believe I would prefer to travel the rest of the way in your fair company, ma'am. I'm quite sure Captain Vickery and I will find another, more suitable setting to test our riding prowess against each other."

While he kept his voice polite and conversational, the last was said with a decided twinkle in his eyes, and he quickly glanced over to Vickery.

"You must admit that the aftermath of horses is easier to deal with for all parties."

Edward shrugged.

"Should Captain Padstowe be still around, perhaps he will agree to act as umpire and join our discussion. Otherwise I'm afraid you will have to be satisfied with my company and whatever Rottlaender decides to turn today's rations into."

The bridge was ahead of them after the few turns that they took. Willoughby slowed Herrero down, Kenley following his example. The two horses saw an easily accessible bank, and were halted before they got an idea to go have a drink.

The bridge was of a good size, not too big, so that the army could not come across it alongside the cannons, but for its use, big enough. The water under it was very deep in places, but fairly calm.

It was old, built mostly of stone, with the middle supported by wood as well. This was complimented by a wooden wall on each side, serving where bits of stone wall had been destroyed in time.

"This is true, of course. I am sure Captain Padstowe would be delighted to be able to help."

He looked up. "We seem to have reached our destination unscathed." He raised an eyebrow. "You know, Captain, there are times that I think that the last people to have built bridges in this country were the Romans." The stone part of the structure looked to Vickery to be closer in age to the Roman era than the Medieval.

"From all I could learn, that is probably the case. Not the worst thing, in my opinion. The Romans had very fine engineers."

Torrington carefully studied the side of the bridge from some distance apart. He took a somewhat larger sketchbook out of his saddlebag and quickly sketched the bridge, surrounding it with various informations about the structure, the river and several other points of importance.

Before he proceeded to inspect the bridge more closely, he asked:

"Does anybody know how the table of the river changes with rain, and generally how it behaves if it rains further upstream? Or could you find out?"

Willoughby and Kenley Turned their horses so that each could cover a portion of land and would, in the case of danger, be able to warn and possibly defend their officers. They looked at the Portuguese woman, who did not seem worried, though she did scan the opposite bank.

"...Roman?" Kenley whispered to his friend and fellow trooper. "Isn't is Portuguese?" He asked. Willoughby chuckled. "...Yes, and no."

Post  Marashar Tue Apr 03, 2012 7:21 am

A farmer, his cart full of wood, came slowly down the road towards the bridge, his mule struggling to pull the heavy cart through the occasional holes and muddy patches.

He looked warily at the small group, closing the distance only slowly now. When he saw the blue-clad officer dismount, fix a rope to the railing, climb over it and then down to study the structure that held the wooden parts to the stone pillars, he stopped his mule and called out, still some distance away:

"Bom dia! Há um problema com a ponte?"

"Uh... no, mister. No problem. " Willoughby was first to answer, as he had moved across a little, to be able to act, should the man prove dangerous. Stefania moved past him, and addressed the farmer, shortly suggesting the reason of them being here. She left as many details out of her explanation as she possibly could. While she believed the Portuguese farmer an honest man, she was aware of the possibility of him merely posing as one.

"Sir." She then turned toward Torrington.

Edward had by now managed to find a firm foothold in the wooden structures under the planks and was ducking under it, but for Stefania's question he reappeared, took hold of the railing over his head with one hand and leaned back a bit to be able to look up at her.

"Yes, ma'am?"

From his peculiar place he hadn't seen the farmer yet.

Post  John Vickery Wed Apr 04, 2012 8:10 am

Vickery leaned down to his friend. "Nothing to worry about, Captain," he said cheerfully. "Just a local asking if there's a problem with the bridge, that you're inspecting it so closely."

There wasn't a problem with it, of course, apart from the fact that the French might end up trying to make use of it at some point, which would cause problems for all the locals if the General decided they should blow it up. Still, they could cross that bridge when they came to it... He smiled at the incongruity of that particular thought.

Inconveniencing the locals was one thing, but it was imperative that they do their best to inconvenience the enemy. The locals would just have to live with it as the price for making life hard for the French.

The corners of Edward's mouth kicked up in a small smile and with a last look under the bridge he took proper hold of the railing and carefully climbed up again.

"You can tell him that there isn't", he reported while disentangling the end of rope around his waist. "Some planks need to be replaced, but unless they grant the General much larger cannon than he has up till now, there's nothing in this army the bridge won't take."

Blowing it up would be possible, too, should it be necessary, even though they would only be able to remove the wooden parts. But Edward would not mention this while Stefania was standing next to them. Hoping that Vickery would understand, he added :"It meets all military needs!"

Willoughby backed his horse a little. Herrero threw his head back, stomped his front, left hoof and neighed. Then he relaxed somewhat only to shake his head a moment later.

Estefania listened to a low whistle that did not come from too far away, and then nodded for the farmer to pass. She moved her own horse out of the way, backed it a little and turned to the two officers. "I am safe to assume, your primary objective will not be to strip this bridge of it's contents so that our men could not pass over it..?" She said, for though she knew that was a possibility - knowing the British - she wished to make certain once more.

There was a stirring of leaf and branch not far from them, but still across the river, on the other bank. It seemed almost deliberate, and the soft whistle repeated itself.

Post  Edward Torrington Mon Apr 09, 2012 8:26 am

Edward tilted his head slightly. He thought he had heard something ... But he still wasn't too familiar with the wildlife here, and on second thought he wasn't too sure he had heard something in the first place.

He concentrated back on Estefania and shook his head.

"No, ma'am. Actually, I propose to repair what damage it had suffered. It is a very fine bridge still, but the weather has caused several of the planks to decay, and they should be replaced before too much rain can leak through and cause the underlying wooden structures to suffer the same fate."

He wasn't lying. Repairing the bridge to make it safe for an army to cross was certainly his main objective - not his only, though.

The farmer had started to come slowly closer again. As he reached the beginning of the bridge, he viewed it sceptically for a moment before he guided his mule onto it, but when it didn't collapse, he quickly hurried over it, touching his cap to Estefania respectfully and to the officers a bit surly.

The sound was there again. A soft rustle, a pair of whistles. Even Estefania became alert, but not in so much so. Seeing her not being worried, was a clear sign that what was going on, was not coming from the enemy.

Two or three of the figures suddenly appeared, and they greeted the farmer politely before passing him and his mule. They began to cross the bridge. They were dressed as civilians, with their clothes mostly in the state that suggested long wear and possible tear.

Of them one was Josef, though his name at present was Agostinho. He was a Portuguese, one of the irregulars. Relatively recently joined. The second and the third were just some of the irregulars that Estefania knew.

Edward moved aside to let the men comfortably pass, but he had a certain tension to his posture that spoke of a certain ... readiness to react to hostile movements.

He nodded in greeting at the farmer. "Bom dia, senhor!"

He was slowly learning a few phrases of the language, although he still kept mixing it up with Italian sometimes.

Josef stopped when he was in line with Estefania, as did the other two men. The taller of the three spoke to her in Portuguese. He asked a couple of things, which she readily answered. When the question came, about who these men were.. the other two had watched them suspiciously since arriving,,, she turned to look at Torrington and then at Vickery introducing them first. The two hussars were mentioned only as escort, but were not introduced.

Josef studied Torrington then. He had recognised the uniforms, though it made him feel no less suspicious. There were spies and then there were little groups of renegades posing as something that they were not. But then, he recognised Vickery. He was the officer whom he had met, when in camp that one time, going alongside Hunter. Of course then his attire had been a lot different. One could say, it was rather of a different world entirely.
