Re: 14th June: Morning beauty
She was certainly a good horsewoman, but again, her tricks weren't quite... English. She performed her stunt quite creditably, Vickery thought, though if his sister had tried the same thing... No, Emma would not try that sort of thing. She was far too genteel.
Cotton must have been watching, because he jogged up. "Everythin' all right, sir?" he asked, looking from Vickery to Torrington to the lady.
"Yes, only would you take the lady's horse and picket her with Brandy, please?"
Cotton nodded and held his hand out to take the animal's reins.

Re: 14th June: Morning beauty
Estefania held the reins to Cotton and smiled. "Thank you, soldier." She paused as if recalling a rumour that she needed confirming. "Rifleman... it is what they call you. Not private, but rifleman?"
She took a step back from the mare who sniffed at Cotton uncertainly and nudged at his shoulder. Her rider approached the captain again. "I do not believe your English women ride so, do they, sir?"

Re: 14th June: Morning beauty
The woman's horse was certainly a fine animal; a bit flashy, like her rider, but with a solid core. It remained to be hoped that the same went true for the woman. Her display just now had certainly been ... irritating in more than one sense. He probably shouldn't expect from a woman fighting for her people the same polite manners English ladies displayed, but just now she had appeared more like ... a performer or an actress.
Edward was honest enough, though, to admit that he had liked the sight in itself quite well. She certainly was a beauty, and a good horsewoman. But was she also a lady? A cattish little voice in the back of his head pointed out that if she wasn't, he might ...
Edward coughed and shook his head:
"Not quite, ma'am."
He led his eyes run over the mare slowly, appreciatively, then circled her slowly.
"You have a very fine horse there. She is pure-blooded, I think?"

Re: 14th June: Morning beauty
Coffee, breakfast and another chair. The first was simple enough, and there were still four cups of the service left, and if he went really fast, got more eggs from somewhere, toasted more bread, and perhaps found some fruit or something to go with it, then the second seemed manageable, too. The third, however, posed a problem, because Captain Torrington only owned one chair and one stool. Well, he certainly owned quite a lot of chairs, but he had only those two seating-accommodations with him at the moment, and Freddie doubted that to bring out the bed would be appropriate.
Dumping the crockery in a basket in Captain Torrington's tent to sort out later, Freddie grabbed the coffee-pot and dashed outside again to the back of the tent to wash the mud off it. Perhaps Cotton could help him with the chair problem? That was, if he came back soon.

Re: 14th June: Morning beauty
"Yes, ladies in England ride side-saddle," Vickery said. He couldn't quite picture Emma wearing breeches or overalls to ride in, and was rather glad of that.
Re: 14th June: Morning beauty
Cotton smiled and nodded at her, waiting for the Captain to finish speaking. "Yes'm, I'm a Rifleman." He raised a hand to stroke the horse's soft nose, before turning to lead her to where Vickery's own horse was picketed.
He caught sight of Rottländer, busy doing something with Captain Torrington's coffee pot, and came back once he'd tied the mare up securely. "You all right there?" he asked amiably.

Re: 14th June: Morning beauty
Freddie was already furiously grinding coffee again, but looked up very gratefully when the older rifleman came up to him.
"Oh, Herr Cotton! I have to make breakfast again; I let it fall." A sudden fear gripped him. He had also broken a fine porcelain cup; nobody had reacted much to it when it had happend, but now he remembered that the Countess back home had once let go a girl from the village because she had broken something. Fighting down the rising panic, he looked pleadingly at Cotton:
"Would you help me? Please? I need a chair and we have only two, and no more eggs and ... please?"

Re: 14th June: Morning beauty
"Hey, hey, calm down, ain't nothin' to worry about," Cotton said reassuringly, thinking. Captain Vickery had two folding camp chairs; certainly they could use those. And there was the food he had planned to cook for Vickery's breakfast anyway, which would hopefully solve the problem of the eggs.
"Come with me, then," he said, indicating Captain Vickery's tent, which was not too far off.

"Indeed, she is a Portuguese..Andalusian." She spoke with pride. She The mane of the horse was clearly trimmed back and braided to keep the strands out of the way and prevent them from catching and hindering the horse's progress through the vegetation of the countryside.
"She is a brave thing." Coming from the line which had been bred for war and bull fighting, this was no lie nor was it saying too little. She stood by the chair upon which she could later sit and observed quietly before, with a small smile, she continued. "English women do not need to ride long... do they?" She did not think they did. Their style of riding was for the pleasure of a sunny day, a few hours in the fresh, cool air. It was not intended to bring them somewhere, else they might have taken a carriage instead. "It is a different land here, different times." She spoke, and looked amused. She seemed to have been wise enough to pick up on the reaction of the two men.

Re: 14th June: Morning beauty
"One moment!"
Freddie ducked into the tent before Cotton could even blink, rummaged around for a few moments, then reappeared with one of the Captain's silver platters, on which he had stacked the crockery and other breakfast utensils; balancing it on one hand, he trapped the coffee-pot under one elbow, took the coffee-grinder again and finally declared himself ready to follow Cotton, smiling all the time gratefully at him.

Re: 14th June: Morning beauty
"Steady on!" Cotton said, looking at all the things Rottländer was carrying. "You can leave that lot here for a moment, can't you? We only want a chair and some eggs from Captain Vick'ry's tent. Be easier if you can help me carry 'em."
Re: 14th June: Morning beauty
Vickery shook his head. "You are right there, senhora. Englishwomen ride for pleasure, for exercise. They may hunt, but that is during winter. And when they travel, they go by chaise. Our roads are better than roads here, for coaches, you see."
Re: 14th June: Morning beauty
"Is it not though, a most dangerous thing for a woman to right side...saddle when in the haste of a hunt?" She had believed the manner in which these women rode to be perhaps excellent for the type of dresses that they wore, as those would not sit kindly if attempting to ride astride the horse's back. No, certainly, there would be a fair struggle to find a way to have them at first sit as they should, without the exposure of limb, that was to be concealed.
"Our roads can be used as such also, sir. It is only, that now are not the times for a leisurely travel, as our enemies would be thrilled to lay their hands on anything of worth. Your English women must feel fortunate to be at home, safe from the throes of war." She smiled politely and meant no ill feelings with those words. It was a different culture, different times which could afford some the pleasures of gaily rides and the others of what was more certain to leave them alive. Knowing proper horsemanship was something to take pride in, of course.

Dark red crept into Freddie's cheek.
"Natürlich .... sorry!", he stammered, obviously embarrased, but he quickly set the whole load of things down.

Re: 14th June: Morning beauty
Not quite knowing how to answer this, Edward took once more recourse to a polite half-bow. He couldn't imagine how it must be, living here with the enemy at one's doorstep, but the fear of invasion was not to be taken too lightly either. From his own experience he knew that often a thread that one could face directly was better to bear.
The picture of his mother crept into his thoughts, and for a moment he felt guilty being here and adding to her worries. But he was actively doing something to lower the risk of England being invaded, he hoped; and he would be careful. If he could help it, Captain Vickery wouldn't have to write to her.
Forcing his thoughts back to the conversation on hand, he patted the mare on the nose and went to stand near Captain Vickery again.
"It must certainly be hard to have the French marauding here, but you may believe me that we will do our utmost to make them see the wrongs of their ways as soon as possible."

Re: 14th June: Morning beauty
"Certainly, I shall hope that we might force them to return from where they have come." And she wondered if these promises would hold true. As for the present it was not the French being driven back, but it had been the British who had lost much in terms of wagons and equipment of such sort.
"Pray tell, Lord Torrington." She spoke politely. "What are your plans at present. Speaking, of course, on the account of our unfriendly neighbours?" She knew it would not be tactful to question the promise and point out the situation, but asking of it rather indicated a hope for a better future.
"We do our part in this as best we are able." She assured him and the captain. This was perhaps another topic, she mused, that the English ladies would be rather unable to address.

Re: 14th June: Morning beauty
Edward felt the muscles in his back tense for a moment at the question; being a rather cautious individual, he didn't particularly care to discuss any plans of war with a foreign lady he had met only five minutes before; although she was an acquaintance of Captain Vickery, the Captain didn't seem too familiar with her as well. The question had been asked artlessly enough, but ... If she was a spy, he would feel offended if the enemy didn't think them important enough to send a competent spy.
Careful not to let his features betray any of his thoughts, he opted for a comment on Senhora Lopes da Almaida's second statement, hoping that if she was genuine, she would forget her question if he showed some interest in her own people's part of the resistance. If she indeed was on their side - something he very much hoped for - then he would indeed very much enjoy listening to her.
"Your best seems to answer remarkably well. I have heard in Lisbon that the French fear your numerous small attacks more than our British battle-lines. Please forgive me the question, if you find it impertinent, but your musket compels me to ask whether you engage yourself in such exploits?"

Re: 14th June: Morning beauty
She noticed the hesitance in answering her question and hoped this was not because they had no plan or that they intended to leave Portugal to the French but rather that he was only overly cautious. She would have preferred this to be the case as it still left hope.
With a light nod she patted her musket. "Indeed, sir. Every man, woman and child is obliged to serve this cause. We protect those who are unable to do so themselves..and.." She tilted her head a bit. "Our irregulars make certain that the French cannot sleep at night, and fear to forage during the day. An army marches on its stomach after all.. when hungry, it is much less prone to be victorious, when afraid less motivated to continue." She studied Torrington thoughtfully.
"Some go to the greater extent than others in.. enforcing that the enemy feels intimidated by those it wishes to conquer."

Re: 14th June: Morning beauty
Edward felt a slight frown draw his brows together and quickly battled it.
Was the woman implying that he didn't do enough? He knew that many officers thought the engineers a rather useless, spineless bunch compared to real , fighting officers, but that many shared that misconception didn't make it any better, and Edward had been more than once forced to make this point quite clear to some gentlemen of the Militia and even to a rather offending cavalry lieutenant on furlong.
But this was a woman, so perhaps her misconceptions must be forgiven? On the other hand, if she, as she claimed, fought herself, surely she must have ... Edward stoped himself. This thought would lead nowhere; even if she had thrown the dart consciously, he couldn't act on it. Perhaps it had all been a misunderstanding and he shouldn't feel offended?
He studied her for a moment himself and suddenly realized what irritated him so much about her: She looked directly at him, something few English women did. Edward wasn't vain enough not to realize that it was impersonal and that Vickery was treated the same way; yet, it felt strange. Not unpleasant, but not comfortable either.
He cleared his throat. "You are certainly right that the French will not win the war if they are starving. But don't you fear that they may dispers and maraud even worse before the end? I would be surprised if General Bonaparte allowed them to return to France without at least some success, starving or not."

Re: 14th June: Morning beauty
She observed the fleeting frown. Has it been something that she said, that upset this man, a lord and officer. She thought her grasp of English had been good enough that it did not offend with the wrong meanings, but then it was not as fine as that of one who spoke if as their native tongue.
Still, if there was anything, he was welcome to speak of it and she would listen but she would not inquire on it. "Do the French not do enough of their crimes at present? I cannot see that treating them with kindness would have them either leave, nor be kinder to the people of our villages, of towns and of churches. " She did not know what the man of Torrington's profession actually did, but refused to ask him directly to expose her ignorance. Instead she inclined her head towards the art and the papers that he had earlier given attention. "Have you finished with.. this?"

Re: 14th June: Morning beauty
Edward passed his eyes quickly over the desk. Fortunately he had rolled up the map to make room for Vickery's and his breakfast. The few notes containing measurements and calculations were of no use to anybody without their reference points. His sketchbook was still open, but - perhaps apart from some rather satirical sketches of the men - it contained nothing questionable or informative.
Picking up the volume, he came to her side to show her the sketch he had done earlier. It was just the outline of the hill and its most prominent features, but in one area he had begun to carefully shade the rocks and paint in smaller details, making this part come vividly alive.
"Not quite. But it doesn't matter. I wanted to capture those shadows. Do you know how that hill is called?"

Re: 14th June: Morning beauty
"The hill?" She studied the sketch admiring the details that had been more finished, and trying to imagine those that were but simple sketches. She brought her hand to her chin thoughtfully and peered closer at the image.
"I've heard it called different names." She tapped her chin. "Most recently.. colina do Francês mortos. The hill of the dead French." She averted her gaze. "...before though.. I believe it was called Santarem... "

Re: 14th June: Morning beauty
Edward took out his pencil and neatly labelled the sketch 'Santarem', then added the date and his signature. The hill would still be there when this war was over, when it was forgotten even. 'Santarem' fitted.
"Thank you, Senhora."
He hesitated for a moment, studying her face, then asked a bit diffidently:
"Would you perhaps allow me to draw you sometimes? I cannot claim to be a good portraitist, but it would give me great pleasure to try to capture your beauty."
The last statement held no flattery, just a simple statement of facts.

Re: 14th June: Morning beauty
Cotton glanced at Rottländer. "Don't panic. You get worried too easily, you do."
He was already thinking of the things they would need from Vickery's tent. "Do you want to carry the eggs, or shall I?" he asked, adding, "Whoever don't carry the eggs has to carry the Captain's chairs, though."

Re: 14th June: Morning beauty
"To draw me, sir?" Was that a play of the English tongue? A word that appeared innocent, yet hid a different meaning in itself or did the officer speak as an artist, and his intentions were quite as pure. He was a gentleman, yet she still gazed at him, at first suspicious.
"Do you mean...as this?" She asked and pointed to the sketch. It was a strange request, yet she did not see what harm it could do. Unless the French would catch hold of such a drawing. Even then, ..?
"Perhaps sir, but would you first explain to me, what are your intentions with this ..picture?" She glanced at Vickery as if expecting the man would know.
