13 June; Inertia
Since being returned to his wagon that morning, Newbury had stayed put. This was much more to do with his own unwillingness to move than with the sour-tempered surgeon's supervision. That bastard could go whistle for all Newbury cared. He was tired and aching and wanting nothing more than to be left alone.
His only attempts at movement revolved around relieving himself. For most of the day he was content to stay curled up under his blanket, more often than not partially dozing. The lack of motion helped keep the pounding in his head to an ache he could mostly ignore, which was heartening.
The morning's excitement left him with a whirlwind of thoughts to sort out. There were too many for him to tackle in a single day, but during his periods of wakefulness he made an effort, until his headache became too much to bear. Perhaps the most valuable thought was that, despite not knowing whoever had moved him to the Rifles' camp, the brief visit had helped soothe a quiet nagging doubt in the back of his mind.
Mostly, anyway. Captain Vickery was bound to consider him basically useless now, even if the lads still saw fit to look after him. It was something to cling to, really. Newbury reckoned that even if he got shifted back to a redcoat regiment at the end of all this, he could probably bear it. At least he'd been a Rifleman for a while.
The surgeon was moving about outside the wagon. Hateful bastard, him. Newbury wished Mister Todd was back. Hell. He wished - or no, he didn't. Better not to think on that, really. Besides. Jenny had that Guards officer now, didn't she? He covered his head with the blanket. It was just about time for another nap, maybe.

Re: 13 June; Inertia
Vickery had dealt with his two absent Riflemen of that morning, and had headed back to check on the third one, a prospect he found more cheering than upbraiding miscreants. It seemed that every time he saw the man, he was in a worse state than before, and it just defied all logic.
He wasn't fully convinced of this surgeon's effectiveness either. Prescribing laudanum for a man suffering from a severe blow to the head just didn't seem right at all. He would probably end up cursing Vickery for interfering yet again, but he had to know how his Rifleman was.
"Good afternoon," he said, as cheerily as he could. "Might I visit for a moment with Rifleman Newbury?"

Re: 13 June; Inertia
The surgeon was close enough to the side of the wagon for Newbury to hear his irritated grunt. "I can hardly stop you, can I?"
Sour hateful bastard, Newbury thought and eased his head out from under the blanket. At least Captain Vickery was bothering to ask. Even though there was really only one reason for him to be coming around. Newbury had no better answers now for how he'd gotten from here to the 60th's fire than he'd had at the time, yet he had no doubt the captain would ask.
Damn it.

Re: 13 June; Inertia
"Thank you," Vickery replied, as though the surgeon had been the politest and most helpful man in Portugal.
"Hello there, Newbury," he said cheerfully, looking into the wagon. "I hope you're feeling a little better after this morning?"

Re: 13 June; Inertia
'Better' was not exactly the word Newbury would have put to it, but he did at least feel a bit more... settled. Was that a good way to put it? He couldn't be sure. His vocabulary wasn't that good.
"Guess you can say that, sir," he answered, making an effort to settle onto his back so he could prop himself up properly against his pack. "I'm... sorry f' that, sir."
Never mind he'd had nothing to do with it.

Re: 13 June; Inertia
"It was hardly your fault. You did say you knew nothing about it until you woke up," Vickery said. He couldn't help wondering whether Newbury's concussion had something to do with that, or not.
Re: 13 June; Inertia
He had, sure, but that didn't mean Newbury wasn't going to feel guilty for the whole affair.
"Yes, sir." He couldn't say much in answer to that, really. Neither did he dare mention that the captain's jacket was still brown. If he did, he would be sent back to the Line. Or worse.

Re: 13 June; Inertia
Vickery sighed. "Of everything that has happened recently, this latest escapade is the one you had the least to do with. You have just been incredibly unlucky lately, I think."
Re: 13 June; Inertia
The captain's tone didn't fill Newbury with very much confidence. Of course, who could blame him for being fed up with Newbury's constantly being in trouble.
"So I've reckoned, sir."
