To his Lordship, the Right Honourable Earl of Gleve, Gleve House, London

Post  Edward Torrington on Wed Aug 24, 2011 8:00 am

Undated letter, Lisbon, Portugal

Dear Sir!

I have arrived safely in Portugal. Although the weather was not very friendly on our journey here, I was told that we actually made quite good time.

A letter awaiting me here assured me that I was indeed posted to the 2nd Division, a fact for which I believe I have to thank your kind help. I will set out tomorrow.

I already have purchased a splendid horse. It came rather dear, as horses appear to be in rather short supply, but I am confident that Trueno will justify the expense.

Enclosed you will find a sample of the fine lace made here. Please present it to Isabella with my compliments and tell her that I will certainly apply for leave the moment I receive news of her impending nuptials.

Your most affectionate son,

Edward

[enclosed in the above]
Dear Mama !

As you may see, I have been neither killed by the weather nor by the French yet. In fact, I believe there is little chance that either will happen in the foreseeable future, as the weather is rather fine and the my work generally ought to be done before any enemy troops arrive.

For your edification I have enclosed two quick sketches of the Cathedral here. The town has some remarkably fine buildings, both antique and in the modern style, although it greatly suffer'd in an earthquake some fifty years ago.

I will endeavour to send back regular reports of my progress here, but was already told that letters do often get lost or arrive very late here. Please be not alarmed, though. I'm sure that news of any catastrophe will travel much faster and securer than good tidings, so you will only miss my poor attempts to brighten your day.

The officers of the His Majesty's sloop Defiance, which conveyed me here, beg to tender their thanks for the excellent pastries you provided me with &which we shared.

I already discovered that tea is a valuable commodity among our British soldiers here. If you can, please dissuade my aunts from sending me any kerchiefs embroidered in patriotic colours and suggest that they send tea instead.

The Defiance, which will take this back, leaves harbour soon, so I must close this letter now, but will always be
Your loving son,

Edward
