Re: 8th June, Guarding prisonnières at night
"I dunno," Couture hedged, not entirely sure how he felt about the idea. " 'sides, what's to stop 'em just takin' 'em whenever they like? Some lads been doin' it right along."

"But some of 'em's got in trouble for it," Charcot countered. "They wasn't organized about it. Besides, we'd only charge a little. What say we flip a coin over it?"

Re: 8th June, Guarding prisonnières at night
Couture hesitated, but what was the harm in flipping a coin? There was a good chance doing so would scrap the idea, after all. "Alright."

Re: 8th June, Guarding prisonnières at night
Charcot fished in his pack until he found a small coin. He balanced it on his thumb and forefinger, being careful not to drop it in the dark. "You win, we'll do it your way. Me, my way. Call it."

Re: 8th June, Guarding prisonnières at night
With a small flip, Charcot caught the coin and palmed it onto the back of his hand. Then he squinted at it in the faint moonlight. "Tails," he said with evident disappointment.

Couture relaxed. He was no a gentleman where women were concerned -- perish the thought -- but even so, Charcot's proposal was flirting uncomfortably close to a line Couture was not prepared to cross.
"Cheer up, Charcot. It ain't like your little Mouse is goin' anywhere, at least."

Re: 8th June, Guarding prisonnières at night
Charcot scowled once again. "But I don't want no one gettin' to her first. Maybe I oughta wake her up and we can make friendly. I still got a bit o' that wine in me pack. Where is she anyway? Probably somewheres in the middle."

Couture laughed, "Oh, aye, that's sure to win her. Wakin' to see you starin' at her outa the dark, face like yours. Give the poor lass nightmares."

Re: 8th June, Guarding prisonnières at night
"Shut it!" Charcot grumbled. "Lass oughta be glad for a bit o' wine, I reckon. Think I might even have some bread 'n cheese in here somewheres. Them lasses get hungry. I seen 'em tearin' through their food. I'm gonna find her." He first fumbled in his pack to find the aforementioned items and then began tiptoeing amongst the sleeping women, searching for his petite fleur-souris.
"Think I found her," he whispered, grinning back at Couture. He knelt and spoke quietly to the sleeping girl. "Psst. Little mouse. Little flowery!"

Re: 8th June, Guarding prisonnières at night
Polly jerked awake with a start. She let out a small shriek at the sight of one of the French guards kneeling over her.
"Wh-wha' d'ye wan'?" she asked, eyes wide.

"Sh-sh-sh-sh!" Charcot whispered urgently, holding up a hand to reassure her. It was difficult, since both of his hands were full. He spoke in French, of course, but he showed her the food to aid his explanation. "It's all right, little Mouse, it's fine. I have some food for you! Would you like some food and wine? Bread and cheese? Come on, come over here."

Re: 8th June, Guarding prisonnières at night
She did not understand a word of French, but the gesture of offering food was certainly one Polly recognized. Glancing uncertainly between Charcot's face and the bread he held, she moved slightly closer. It looked good, and she was hungry. Just a little bit would be nice, particularly if it was being offered.
Still, he was a Frenchman. And they made Polly very nervous.
Stopping an arm's reach away, she bit her lip and looked again at the food. It could be a trick, she supposed, even as her stomach growled emptily. But, still, it was food.

Charcot turned back to give Couture a rather pleased and self-satisfied grin. He began moving back toward the periphery and gestured for the girl to follow him, waving the bread at her as if coaxing a timid animal. "Come on, sweetheart. Come over here and we'll share it together. I've got cheese too, see? Cheese. C'mon. Don't wanna wake up everyone here."

Re: 8th June, Guarding prisonnières at night
Rather against her better judgement, Polly moved a bit closer towards Charcot.
She was just so hungry. And, if he was offering food, he could not be too terrible. Right? Though, perhaps he was teasing her - waving food around so he could eat it himself when she got near. She slowed down again, thinking it through. What would Jenny do in this situation?
Polly glanced around to see if the older woman was sleeping anywhere nearby. After all, if the soldier was going to share food, it would be selfish to keep it all to herself.

Re: 8th June, Guarding prisonnières at night
"Come on, little mousie!" he called again, wheedling in tone but beginning to have doubts. Maybe this sort of coaxing wouldn't work at all. Maybe fellows like Quentin had it right, that a mouse had to be snatched by force.
What would he have to do to persuade her if food wasn't enough enticement? Or perhaps she could not decide if she was hungry enough. Perhaps she would make up her mind if she saw him eating the bread, and saw her chance disappearing. With some difficulty, he broke off a piece of the crusty bread and began chewing it. Then, to show his goodwill, he threw a little piece to the girl.

Re: 8th June, Guarding prisonnières at night
The small piece of bread landing at Polly's feet drew her attention back, and she quickly snatched it up. Dusting it off quickly, she took a small bite and smiled. It was good!
She sent a shy smile to Charcot.
"Thank ye," she told him.

Re: 8th June, Guarding prisonnières at night
There! He'd won her over, like he'd known he would. "Yes, yes, my little smiling mouse!" he laughed quietly. "Come, come!" He beckoned her closer, waving the bread as he moved away, back to where Couture was still on guard at the edge of the sleeping group. Charcot sat on the ground and set the wine bottle down beside him.

Inching closer, Couture subtly scooped up the bottle of wine and put it to his lips.

Moving a moment too late, Charcot swiped at the air and let out a curse as he nearly fell over. "Damnit, Couture, I need that for my girl! Give it back!"

Re: 8th June, Guarding prisonnières at night
Couture laughed, nearly choking on the mouthful of wine. "What? All of it?" He grinned, waving the bottle just out of Charcot's reach.

"C'mon, Couture!" he whispered harshly. "Go find your own wine and your woman with kettledrums!" He glanced back at Polly, fearful lest she should take fright from Couture's antics.

"Too good to share with your mates now," Couture needled, handing the bottle back to him with feigned reluctance, "I see how it is."

Couture's grin only broadened. "Shoulda thought o' that 'fore you lured your little Mouse over here, then, hadn't you?"
