Dubreuil frowned in confusion but did not comment upon the reply. "Where are you taking them now? And who's your commanding officer?"

Re: 7 June; Partners in crime
Jenny interrupted again, addressing herself to the first officer. "Please, Monsieur Chevenier. I do not like him," looking at Bright, "and I am afraid. I do not understand. Help me. I talk with you."
Re: 7 June; Partners in crime
Chevenier certainly did not blame the woman for disliking Bright. There was something very unsettling about the man, and Chevenier did not trust him in the least. However, the entire situation was still far too unclear to just let any of it go.
He suppressed another sigh, and silently cursed Leveque. Clearly, this was his fault for getting them involved with the Englishwomen in the first place.
"Why don't you explain to us what happened, Madame," Chevenier asked Jenny, hoping to calm her somewhat. "Tell us about the night the Riflemen escaped, and then about the argument with this soldier here. Then we'll see what happens. Alright?"

Re: 7 June; Partners in crime
She looked from one officer to the other. "I speak English and he speak for me?" She switched languages and addressed Dubreuil. "I had dinner with Monsieur Chevenier and the other officers, and then... I went and told the riflemen how to escape. And I distracted the guards."
Re: 7 June; Partners in crime
Oh please. This was much too easy and too complicated at the same time. Damned girl, Bright thought acidly. Clearly he'd picked the wrong one. Of course, if she could stick to one damned story for longer than a minute...

Re: 7 June; Partners in crime
Chevenier frowned as Dubreuil relayed the girl's explanation. She seemed earnest enough, but the story did not seem right to him.
"How did you distract the guard?" He asked. "For that matter, how did you get there to do so? I'm fairly certain you and your companion were escorted back to the other women."

Re: 7 June; Partners in crime
She spoke in French once again, knowing that it would irritate Sykes.
"I visited the surgeon," she reminded the officer. He must have blocked the unpleasant incident from his mind. "And then, I depart. And the guards - I am beautiful. They are..." She made a show of looking at the sky as if thinking desperately. "They are Kerjean and... Pelletier." She was fairly certain that Kerjean would not have been guarding the riflemen late that night, as he had been on duty all through the evening. And she knew very well that Pelletier was the servant who had cooked their meal. "It's true, it's true! Not him!" she added, looking at her beloved Sykes.

Re: 7 June; Partners in crime
Ah, yes. He had forgotten that she had gone to the surgeon, though he had been under the impression that she had actually been ill. Chevenier made a mental note to ask Pelletier and this Kerjean what had happened.
"They brought you to the riflemen?" he asked doubtfully. It did not seem likely that Pelletier would have helped with such a scheme - knowingly or not. He was increasingly convinced of her "husband's" guilt, over that of the young woman herself. The whole story came across far too much like a desperate attempt to hide something.

Re: 7 June; Partners in crime
Chevenier fought the urge to rub at his temples - he could feel a headache building. Instead, he took a controlled breath let it back out slowly. This was undoubtedly one of the more frustrating conversations he had been involved in for some time. Which was certainly saying something.
"Thank you, Miss Ross," he said tightly.
"Who is your commander officer?" he asked, turning to Bright. "Does he know of this?"
Perhaps finding out precisely what the man's orders and intentions had been would help them get to the bottom of the whole affair. And, bringing it in front of his actual officer would take it safely out of Chevenier's hands.

"Sous-lieutenant Leclerc, sir. He don't, but he ain't in a fit state fer much thinkin' either," Bright answered and privately wondered if he could box this idiot harpy's ears for ruining his evening.

"Leclerc is a capable fellow," Dubreuil said to Chevenier, blithely overlooking the last part of the answer. "I'm sure he can deal with the problem without your interference or mine. Besides, I need to ask your opinion on a horse. Will you come and take a look?"

Re: 7 June; Partners in crime
Ah! A much-appreciated out from the conversation. And, Chevenier certainly never turned down an opportunity to look over a fine horse.
"With pleasure," he told Dubreuil with a smile.
Turning back to Bright, he said sternly: "I expect you to report to your sous-lieutenant post-haste, soldat." He gestured to Sykes and Jenny. "Bring these two with you, and explain the situation."
Looking around, he beckoned another of the soldiers forward. "You there!"
"Coitreau, sir," the soldier responded, hurrying over. He glanced curiously at the oddly assembled group, but refrained from commenting. Usually best to get as little involved as possible, particularly when there were so many officers about.
"Accompany them to Sous-Lieutenant Leclerc," Chevenier ordered. Best to have one soldier per prisoner. Particularly with how excitable Miss Ross was proving to be over the whole situation.
"Yes, sir," Coitreau said. He was even more confused now.
"Well, off with all of you, then," Chevenier said with a sigh. "Get this sorted."

Re: 7 June; Partners in crime
He was sending them away? Bloody officers. No use to anybody. But at least there was another soldier with them, a proper French soldier. Surely the two Englishmen would not try anything together with him there.
She spoke as calmly and mildly as she could. "Tell me what it is you want, and maybe I can help you."

"What the bloody hell just happened?" Sykes demanded almost at the same moment.
