11th June, later in the day: Partnerships formed

Post  Zachary Pye on Tue Jul 05, 2011 9:22 am

The camp went about it's usual hustle and bustle. The loss was still felt. A long conversation with the captain set Pye's mind at ease, another with Cotton had him feeling hopeful and glad that he had talked with the man so that the secrets previously misunderstood could finally be put to rest.

Sipping at his last cup of tea, he was notified that he was to see the captain again. He wondered if there was a change of heart in the man but decided that before he would think to speculate further he would see the man in person.

The air was cooler now, much more pleasant than during the day, the birds still quite lively and loud. He had seen one flock rise from a tree, circle above them and then fly to a more distant tree where they could feel safe. There was some movement on the ground, but it was a mere field mouse making a run for it. A couple of the German riflemen were sipping away at their brew, and nattering on in their strange language. They laughed, clapped their hands over their thighs, while a couple smoke their pipes.

Further on, Pye saw the tent. He dusted himself again to be as presentable as he could be and halted infront of the tent. He knew Gabriel had to be near somewhere and sought out the man with his gaze.

Cotton had been tending a fire nearby, but as Pye approached, he stood, wiping his hands on his grubby brown trousers (he had long ago 'acquired' some of the brown woollen cloth the Portuguese monks made their habits out of, and had it made up into a pair of trousers for everyday use, determined to keep his issue dark blue trousers for 'best').

He frowned, looking around for the other Rifleman who had been told to report to Vickery. There was no point in announcing them one at a time, not when the Captain had asked to see them together.

"You ain't in trouble, Pye," he said, trying to reassure the lad, who looked a little nervous - as well he might.

"Seen Burke?" he added, and then realised Pye probably wouldn't have a clue who he was talking about. "Never mind, ignore me."

"S' good to know." Pye felt relieved, but still nervous as now he did not know why he was called there at all. When his mind suggested that perhaps Vickery had decided that he would rejoin the other riflemen and serve his duty sooner, all was well with the world yet again.

"Burke?" No. He shook his head. Neither did he know a Burke nor had he seen one. "Why? Why do you need him?" he knew where most other riflemen were. If Cotton needed something from this man he could run and fetch him lafter he had had his meeting with Vickery.

"Can yer' see if t' captain's ready to receive me?"

"He won't be just yet," Cotton replied. Vickery had been quite clear on that point: Cotton was only to call him when all the Riflemen concerned had arrived. "Though I promise there ain't anythin' to fret over."

Post  Brendan Burke on Tue Jul 05, 2011 10:20 am

Burke hurried towards the Captain's tent, hastily smoothing his jacket. He had just been told that his presence was required, and heartily hoped that he had not managed to do anything too terribly wrong yet. Catching sight of the two men standing outside, he slowed to a halt.

"Afternoon," he said to Cotton, with a half smile. "I heard that Capt'n Vickery wanted t' see me?"

He stood up from the German group and slapped one of the other riflemen on the shoulder and laughed saying something vulgar in German before he patted himself down and made his way over towards Vickery's tent. He nodded to Pye and Cotton.

"Do either of you know vhy I vas summoned?"

Post  Zachary Pye on Tue Jul 05, 2011 10:28 am

"'fternoon." This had to be Burke or it could quite be another man altogether. He had not introduced himself and he was vaguely remembered as the face that challenged them when they were just returning to the army.

The red collar on Burke's coat were bright and strong in colour, which could indicate him being a new man in the 60th. His own coat in comparison looked like it had gone and been ridden away in a storm before returning to its wearer. He'd dusted it, cleaned it and tried to cut away any loose thread and make it presentable, but he was better to get the new one that Vickery had just promised - against pay stopped from him - earlier in the day.

Who were they waiting for? Was it this man's turn to be first even if arriving later? He gazed towards Cotton with a questioning expression clear on his face.

The arrival of the second man, this one of higher stature, made Pye snap to attention. He did not know, so Cotton was the best bet to answer.

Cotton nodded. "Aft'noon. Aye, he does - though there's a couple more folks he wants to see, an' all. Ain't nothin' bad," he added hastily, looking around, hoping to spot them. Ah - there was Falkenbeck, at least. Now, where was the other fellow?

There he was. Good. "You ain't none of you in trouble," he said. The first thought a man always had when summoned to see an officer was What the hell have I done now? It had been Cotton's own reaction when summoned for the interview that had resulted in him becoming Vickery's batman.

"Jus' a minute," he said and turned to duck into Vickery's tent to inform him that the four men he'd sent for had reported as ordered.

It was certainly a relief to know that none of them were there to get in trouble. Burke felt a weight lift off his shoulders. He looked curiously at the other men waiting. The younger one looked familiar - and in need of some serious mending. He looked like he'd been in a fight with a wild animal.

Burke frowned, trying to place the lad's face.

"Oi," he said, confused, "weren't ye dressed like a Frog couple o' days ago?"

It was for the wrong person to remember the wrong thing at the wrong time. Pye scowled but gave a very faint affirmative nod. "Was one o' the escaped prisoners." He answered instead.

"You've spotted us firs', didn't you?" He was more baffled why Vickery would want all four here at the same time. Now, he had not known any of the other three. One had a funny accent, when he spoke. Certainly German. The last one he could not yet place. They had nothing in common but for being riflemen and being summoned.

The Captain's arrival cut off Burke's reply to Pye. Good to know the lad was actually one of them. Like as not there was a story behind that French jacket, but that was not the pressing issue just then.

"Sir," he said, saluting as they were acknowledged.

"Sir." Pye followed suit, standing smartly. Vickery started in German, which had Pye blink. Guten Tag. He repeated it in mind again, distracted for the moment by the intent on remembering that word for later. Vickery wanted them to know some German. So, what was this all about?

The news was a relief but it did not answer why they were all called here for. Since all four were relatively new - Pye guessed he was correct in this assumption and that he had not only missed the men before - the clue might have been there. A mission for only four men who did now know each other as well was probably out of the question.

He shifted and relaxed his stance and waited. So, what was it? Could only one or two of them remain in the rifles? Hopefully not.

"Right, I have brought you four together for the simple reason that you all are in the same position, namely, you need a skirmishing partner," Vickery began, speaking in English, and paused, looking at Hartmann.

He switched to German. "I will explain in English first and if you need me to repeat what I say in German, let me know and I will."

The Rifleman had done at least some training in England, but Vickery did not know how much English he could understand, and this was important enough that he needed the lad to understand what he was saying and what it meant for him.

Vickery nodded, pleased that the lad could understand him. "If there is anything that you don't understand, you may ask me to explain," he added, before turning back to the subject at hand.

"Falkenbeck, I am sorry about Friedler's death. I hope you don't mind if I put you with Hartmann." The Rifleman glanced at Hartmann and nodded, satisfied.

"Burke and Pye, you have recently joined us. Burke, I understand you are an experienced Rifleman. Pye has recently transferred from a redcoat regiment, although he has been taught the rudiments of his trade as a Rifleman. I would like to pair you together, although the final decision is yours." He looked between them, giving them the opportunity to reply.

Skirmishing partner. Getting one. Had been called for that. Pye blinked, having been taken aback by the news. It was enough that he did not know at all how to react. It was thrilling news however. Far from putting him to blame it was the sort of news he had hoped for. He looked at Burke. He looked like a decent chap. Friendly, experienced, no different than any other.

"s' fine b' me, sir." Of course, the hardest decision was to be made by the other lad. Pye had little to loose and much to gain with the new partner. Burke could feel Pye to be a bad choice for a partner. He hoped he would atleast give it a try before saying no.

A skirmishing partner who spoke English was certainly a relief to Burke. He had been a bit apprehensive at being paired with someone with whom he would be unable to fully communicate - it would definitely have made things more difficult.

He gave Pye a speculative glance. The lad was plenty ragged and seemed young. Still, he would not be a rifleman if he had not earned it in some way. Experience would do a lot.

"Sounds jist fine t' me, sir," Burke said, with a smile.

Besides, he still needed to hear the story behind that French uniform.
