A mug. That Cobb did not have, for he typically relied on his batman to produce mess equipment whenever he needed it. The Irishman was rifling about in his pack before Cobb had a chance to open his mouth, however, and in a moment a little tin mug was steaming with fresh tea.

"Thank you," Cobb said, taking the mug gratefully.

McIntyre's response was two at once. "Welcome, sir. An' thank'ee, Missus. That's if the cap'n don't mind...?"

Vickery couldn't help twitching an eyebrow at the way McIntyre seemed to be able to produce all sorts of varied tinware from his pack. Did he have anything else in there besides plates, mugs and crockery, the Rifles Captain wondered.

Belatedly he realised that he had been addressed. "No, I don't mind," he replied. It wasn't as though he needed his jacket, if he was going to be confined to a wagon, after all.

That was good enough for his batman, Cobb observed. The dark green jacket was handed off to the woman opposite him, then McIntyre finished laying out his shaving kit. For all his apparent disapproval of the man, there was no denying the fact that his batman knew his business and didn't waste time or movement going about his duties.

"I dare say you'll not be kept off the march for too long, sir," he said.

"I certainly hope I shall not be," he answered, playing with the dog's ears. What concerned him most about the whole thing was the welfare of his Company. He trusted his Lieutenants, of course, but they simply didn't have the experience that he himself did. They did have several experienced Sergeants, of course - the Rifles as a whole had a far greater proportion of NCOs to men than most other regiments. When a man was promoted to Sergeant in the Rifles, they didn't lose a rifleman because Rifles Sergeants carried rifles rather than halberds.

"I must thank you for lending me his services," he added, aware suddenly that he hadn't actually thanked Cobb yet.

Cobb waved his half-empty mug in a gesture of dismissal. "No trouble at all, sir." Even though he had no idea what he'd been thinking to have made the arrangement in the first place. It hadn't occurred to him until earlier that same morning how uncomfortable it was to look after himself.

"Mind you sit still, sir," McIntyre said as he lowered himself carefully down onto one knee so he could use a dampened cloth to pat at the grasshopper's face. There was nothing more unpleasant than a dry shave, after all. "This'll not take a minute."

Vickery wasn't entirely sure he trusted a near-stranger to be anywhere near him with a razor, but McIntyre had proven trustworthy so far, and Lieutenant Cobb was there to keep an eye on him. He seemed to know what he was doing, anyway, and Vickery couldn't deny that he would probably feel a lot better for being clean-shaven.

The tea was not quite as warm as he usually liked, but he figured McIntyre had taken the pot off the fire so it wouldn't boil. He was a quick study for a fellow still comparatively new to being a batman.

"He's the steadiest hand I've seen, sir," Cobb offered, guessing the grasshopper might not be at ease. "Though I'm sure one needs a sure hand when shaving at sea."

McIntyre stifled a grin and went about the task of shaving the greenjacket without comment.

"Mm-hm," Vickery murmured. He couldn't really say anything else, not when McIntyre was scraping at his jaw with a lethally-sharp razor. It seemed that Mister Cobb was in the right of it - though of course he would be, being the usual recipient of McIntyre's services.

It didn't take long to scrape off the light stubble from the grasshopper's cheeks and chin. He'd need a hair cut soon too, McIntyre judged, then smiled at the absurdity of that thought. If his sergeant were ever to get his way, McIntyre himself would be shorn bald. His stubborn insistence on keeping his queue was bound some day to get him in real trouble but he had never not worn his hair long.

"That'll do, sir," he said, setting the razor aside to pick up the damp towel again. Another quick patting-down of the face, then a final towelling dry, and it was done.

Re: 2 June; Not so good morning

Post  Alberto Ferrero on Sun Jun 12, 2011 2:56 am

Alberto arrived at the encampment late in the morning, He paused to rest for a few minutes after the last few miles walking. He traveled most of the time with the supply carts. Definitely not luxury transportation, but still better than travelling by foot.
The driver of the cart he was sitting on, a fat and smelly englishman with a solitary tooth in his mouth and an hobby for spitting when talking, recounted for Alberto the news about what happened to the 60th. A battle with the French, damn them he said, and captured riflemen. No good news indeed. After a lengthy tirade against almost any partecipant on the battle and the hundredth spit landing on his face, Alberto decided to jump out of the cart and to continue on his feet.

He took off his cap, passed his hand in his hair and dried his forehead. He asked for directions and approached the tent he was told.
Three men were there. Two where definitely officer material. One, in particular, was the wounded captain he was pointed to. Even wounded, his bearing was that of the perfect officer. The third character was another quality of man. He's skin burnt as leather and he seemed as used to fatigue as an old horse.
Alberto straightened out his uniform, inspired and approached the tent.
"Sir, Lieutenant Ferrero reporting in." he said waiting right outside the tent.

Re: 2 June; Not so good morning

Post  John Vickery on Sun Jun 12, 2011 6:33 am

It was not how he had wanted to meet his new Lieutenant - sitting on the ground wearing one of his men's shirts and with only a vague idea of where his jacket was, and even less clear on the whereabouts of his sash. He rethought that - the dog had got hold of his jacket so it was around here somewhere.

He looked over at his borrowed batman. "Do you think I could have my jacket for the next few minutes, McIntyre, please?"

The redcoat made a sound in the back of his throat that sounded very like a sigh. "'Fraid your woman's got it - said she wanted it to wash or summat."

Hell. Shirtsleeves it would have to be then, no matter how unpresentable it made him. "I beg your pardon, Lieutenant," he said. "Have a seat." He indicated the bare ground with a rueful smile. "I am afraid you have caught us at a bad time - usually I would have a chair to offer you, at least."

Post  Maggie Cotton on Sun Jun 12, 2011 6:56 am

His woman? Maggie's face flushed as red as the patches on the captain's jacket as she quickly patted it with the damp cloth. She was using her apron again, poor old thing, since she did not have any other rags to hand. The apron was destined to become a rag itself at this rate.

She rose and gave the jacket a quick shake and peeked around the corner of the tent. The captain's visitor was another young rifles officer, a strikingly handsome fellow that she had never seen before. She wondered whether or not she ought to interrupt to give the captain his slightly damp jacket.

Re: 2 June; Not so good morning

Post  John Vickery on Sun Jun 12, 2011 7:14 am

"She's hardly my woman," Vickery pointed out mildly. "She's married to Rifleman Cotton, my batman." He supposed that, technically speaking, she could be thought of as 'his woman' as Cotton was his man, but when the officers had ladies, the sergeants had wives and the common soldiers had women, that probably wasn't the first thing to come to mind.

"I am not sure if there is any tea left - and if there is, it will be smouch." Cotton would probably have fifty fits at finding his officer drinking smouch, let alone offering it to another officer. If he ever found out... Vickery was not going to be the one to tell him. Although on second thoughts, watching Cotton spluttering with indignation could be quite entertaining.

If Cotton ever returned to them, which wasn't all that likely, unless they could somehow arrange a prisoner exchange or something.

"Thanks Sir, a chair would make a great addition to the tent but i think at the moment the furniture shortage can be seen as a minor problem, can't it?" Alberto answered smiling. He decided not to mention the officer's wounds, pointing out his captain's weakness wasn't probably the best idea.

"Sir, coming north i heard pieces of information about the Regiment situation..." Alberto was about to ask of the prisoners, but stopped when he saw the Rifleman's wife. Maybe she was married to one of them.

"There are probably all sorts of rumours flying around. We had a reversal about a week ago which meant that we were falling back on Oporto and the French decided to make the most of their opportunity and attacked, severely mauling the baggage despite our best efforts, and taking several prisoners, among them my batman."

He shrugged; what was done was done. "Still. Tell me a little about yourself - have you seen much action?"

Someone offered the new Lieutenant a cup of strong black tea in a battered tin mug.

Albert held the cup in two hands, enjoying the contact with the warm metal. After taking a sip of tea, as strong as the army liked, he answered.

"Sir, i'm a bit embarassed to say that i have never seen action against an enemy on a field. I have just arrived from Britain, as of now apart from the training the most dangerous activity i made was asking for a ride on a supply cart up and down the slopes of these mountains." he said smiling.

Right. That made it doubly important that he get back to his Company as quickly as he could - he could hardly leave a Lieutenant fresh from the training depot to work alongside Lieutenant Brady. A new officer needed to learn his trade in the field under the command of a more experienced senior, after all.

"You will see plenty of action with the Rifles. I believe the toast of the 95th is 'the first into the field and the last off it', and the 60th are not so different from them." At least the Rifles' training was thorough, and an officer of the Rifle regiments knew the drill manual and how to skirmish from the perspective of the men - every officer wanting to wear green had done the training with the men, in the same squads, even while living in the Officers' Mess.

He smiled. "I think you will find life in the 60th out here to be different from anything you have experienced before. Although we are a complete Battalion, we have recently been split up into our constituent Companies and attached to regular Line regiments, in order to provide skirmishers for the whole Division." He smiled. "Which makes me the senior officer of the 60th with the Second Division - although Major Davy is in overall command of the 60th. You will find that you have a lot of responsibility very quickly."

"I am pleased to hear it," Vickery replied. "And what do you prefer to be called? I can hardly call you Lieutenant every time I want to address you informally, after all - it would get very tiresome very quickly, especially with there only being three officers in the Company."

The Captain seemed like a good man. English to the bone, that was for sure. But seemed to possess those good qualities that he appreciated in some of the aristocratic englishmen: sense of duty, modesty and goodwill. Not that Alberto tried to absorb any of those. But in others, he appreciated them.

"Mister Ferrero. Although I suppose Senhor Ferrero is closer to it, really." He shifted his own tin cup a little. "You must forgive me. I am fairly fluent in German, and relatively so in Portuguese, being an officer in a battalion consisting mainly of Germans, which has wintered in Lisbon." His new Lieutenant's accent hadn't sounded Portuguese or Spanish - and if he were either of those nationalities, Vickery would have expected to see him in Portuguese or Spanish uniform, rather than British.

"If I may be so bold as to enquire, what led you to join the British army?" he asked.

"Sir, i think an explanation from my part is necessary. My family comes from the Kingdom of Piedmont, Princes of Marmora and counts of Mosso." said Alberto toying with the empty tin mug in his hands "When the French arrived, at first they forced an armistice upon our King. Then those..." he paused like he was searching for the words "...frogeaters deposed the King. At first they created a Republic, they called it, people's government they say. Yes, like a farm that doesn't need a farmer right?" he spat out the last sentences in one long breath.
After gulping the last sip of tea he continued: "Then their real face was shown, now there's a Kingdom of Italy, it is nothing but a fake, puppet state. Sadly, my family gave the Kingdom of Piedmont numerous Ministers and Generals, and much of the foreign commercial ventures were handled by our house. As soon as the rightful King was exiled in Sardinia, our position was compromised. My father decided to transfer the offices in London when i was a younger, for he had many interests with British partners."

"I grew up in London, and regarding why i enlisted...let's just say that circumstances pushed me..." Alberto paused, realizing that he used very dangerous words, and quickly added "...from the inside, i mean...well that a desire to fight for the country i grew up in and for the King." he quickly nodded, keeping his lips tightly closed and realizing that his wording was probably not the best, given whom he was talking to.

Re: 2 June; Not so good morning

"Ah." Vickery reflected that, had things been otherwise, he could well have made the same choice that Lieutenant Ferrero had, and for the same reasons. "I understand. I do not hold your past against you - when a man joins the Rifles, joins my Company, his past is his own business. He has a clean slate, a fresh start, here. Thank you for being frank with me."

He was growing to like the young man, and was a little relieved; there was nothing that he hated more than having to work with officers who he did not get on with.

"I have been informed that I am on light duties and must consider myself unfit to march with the men today," he added. "That will not stop me from taking you to meet them, however. I understand we may get a few days billeted nearby, which will aid my recovery so that I will be fit enough to take command again. I should hate to leave you and Lieutenant Brady to manage things in my absence - it would be a heavy duty to shoulder for one newly arrived in Portugal."

King George commands, and we obey
Over the hills and far away ~ Traditional

An officer must be confident in giving orders, or else the soldier will not be confident in executing them.

"Well Sir, as someone might say, it is better to hit the ground running. Don't worry Sir, think about resting and getting back in strength, up until that moment i think we can get things going anyway." Alberto said with a vague sense of missing something, like where his men were and what to do with them. That seemed to him like a minor problem.
