Snow Day
(oc: in honour of all the snow in the past few weeks)
Burke blew on his cold fingers and stamped his feet in an attempt to warm himself as he stood outside the Crown. At some point in the night it had snowed, and the landscape was almost blindingly white and crisp. He blinked a bit as his eyes adjusted, face already tingling with the cold.
"Bloody freezing," he muttered, with a frown.
Then, a thought occurred to him and he grinned.
"Oi!" He called in towards the pub, reaching down to pack a handful of snow into a tight ball. "Anyone about?"

Re: Snow Day
Nat poked his head out the door, "Who's askin?" Then, seeing the thick blanket of snow on the ground, his face cracked into a grin and he bounded across the threshold, heedless of the cold on his bare feet. He hadn't seen snow, proper snow since he was a boy.
Re: Snow Day
Burke's own grin widened as Kelly came out into the snow.
"I am!" he called, throwing his snowball at the other man. He quickly grabbed another handful of snow, already poised to run at any sign of retaliation.

Re: Snow Day
Nat staggered back as a tightly packed ball of snow caught him squarely in the face. For a moment, he was too startled to speak, then with a hoot of laughter, grabbed a handful himself and charged at Burke. This was brilliant!
Re: Snow Day
Laughing, Burke took off running as Kelly headed towards him. He hurried to pack the snow in his hands into another ball. It was slightly sloppier and less well packed than the first one, but he figured it would still fly well enough. Turning, Burke threw it over his shoulder at Kelly without breaking stride.
Re: Snow Day
Nat ducked and felt the snowball glance off his shoulder. He skidded to a halt, almost losing his footing in the snow and let fly with his own projectile. Then, grabbing another handful, he took off after Burke again.
Re: Snow Day
A snowball hit Burke squarely in the back. He skidded out and landed in the snow, the air rushing out of him in a surprised laugh. Some soldier he was, taken out by a thrown clump of snow! Standing back up, he shook the snow out of his hair and brushed off his coat. Blasted stuff was cold!
Still grinning, he grabbed an even larger handful of snow, pressed it together and threw it at the oncoming sailor.

Re: Snow Day
Oxley had grabbed his scarf as soon as he saw that there was snow lying on the ground, and dashed out of the Crown. Snow meant fun: snowmen, snowball fights...
It was cold out, even with his uniform coat on, but he didn't care about that, as he stooped down to grab a handful of snow. And as he straightened up, a snowball hit him in the ball of the head. He turned around to see a man in a green jacket, who'd obviously just thrown it. He shrugged and launched his own snowball at the greenjacket.

Re: Snow Day
Nat’s feet slid out from under him as he tried to dodge Burke’s throw and he flailed backwards into the snow, laughing. Holy hell, it was cold! A shadow fell across him and he recognized the looming form as the drummer, Tom Oxley.
“Tom!” he cried in delight, rolling to his feet and shaking off. Ignoring the deep ache spreading through his feet, he grabbed another handful of snow and grinned at Oxley, “C’mon!”

Re: Snow Day
Oxley's snowball hit Burke in the shoulder, spraying snow up into his face and neck. He was already cold and damp, but he couldn't remember the last time he'd had such fun. However, the fact that there were now two sailors with snow balls set him back to running.
Now would be a good time for reinforcements, as far as he was concerned!

Re: Snow Day
That was an unfair fight. Two water threaders against one grasshopper. Pye came from the pub after hearing loud laughter through the window. He had been feeling a draft for a while and realised somebody went to air the rooms, but forgot to finish the job properly.
Never the less, right there, in the snow, a merry group of three was seen throwing snow at each other and shaking and dusting themselves a little like dogs. He grinned and ducked through the door silently, tiptoeing his way along the side of the pub. He did not need to try being quiet all that much. The ruckus the three were making was enough to wake up the dead.
Never the less, he reached down and began to press snow into a neat ball. Still more like creeping towards the running trio, he crouched down. Made two more balls and then the first went flying. He took aim at the bigger seaman as he provided him with a bigger target. Crouching again he snatched the second snowball and this time aimed for the lad, wrapped in his scarf. He grinned.

Re: Snow Day
When another snowball came flying by, Burke turned around in surprise. He grinned to see another rifleman crouched in the snow. Two against two was much more fair!
"Thanks, mate!" he called, grinning. Then, stooped to grab more snow.

Re: Snow Day
Oxley blinked in surprise as a snowball hit him in the head, knocking his hat off. He stooped to pick it up and cram it back on, before gathering another handful of snow.
Well, fair was fair. Two Navy against two Army couldn't be fairer. He let fly at the newcomer.

Re: Snow Day
Pye grinned: "Only fair." He called back and barely ducked fast enough that the snowball only skimmed above his head, striking his shako instead of his head. It did send his shako flying. Ah well. Sacrifices ought to be made.
He gathered more snow in his hands and then charged after Oxley. "Come back o'er ere you!" He yelled. "The riflemen shall win t' day!" He added with a cheerful laugh.

Re: Snow Day
The Rifleman was only about his own age, Oxley realised, and grinned. "A chance'd be a fine thing!" he said, and threw another hastily-made snowball at the greenjacket.
Re: Snow Day
Pye oomphed as the snowball struck him right across the nose and mouth. He spat the cold, and partially melted snow out and grinned as he made a dive for the other lad. A handful of snow had a single purpose. And that was, to be stuffed down the back of Oxley's coat, if at all possible. But if he failed, it could still be chugged at the lad's face. "an iced lobster comin'!"
Re: Snow Day
"Nuh-uh!" Oxley said, and darted away from the Rifleman. "What do they call you Riflemen, anyhow? Apart from snowmen." He didn't have time to make a proper snowball, so just threw a handful of snow in the other lad's direction.
Re: Snow Day
Pye ducked and grinned. "Call us.. t' best there is. T' finest men.. t' lot ter aspire ter." He patted a snowball into shape and took aim at the marine. "T' chosen ones. " He threw the snowball. "What're they calling you, 'other n' slow 's 'ell.. an' soon ter be buried under a pile o' snow?" True to his threat he sped after the lad, with the intention to do just that.
