Re: 1st June, night; campfire
"Not yet" he said. "Only saw him from far."
Another soldier approached them.
"Good evening" Wilhelm answered. The fire was bound to get men near, it was so temptingly warm and homely.

Not yet. Really. "Evenin', Billy," Stubbins greeted, nodding at the bugler. "You lookin' to join the Staff too, sir?"

Re: 1st June, night; campfire
William shook his head "no... not really.. just couldn't sleep, and heard voices and decided to check it out.." he rubbed his eyes and concealed a yawn he was getting tired but not tired enough to sleep he looked between the two and thought for a moment what to say before before saying half tired "well its a fine evening aye?"

Re: 1st June, night; campfire
"It is indeed" he threw the remainder of his cigarillo in the campfire and fetched another. Usually one was enough to give a calm and pleasant feeling - and he needed that after battles - but now he felt the need for a second one.

Re: 1st June, night; campfire
"I s'pose," Stubbins said grudgingly. "This officer's wantin' to be a Staff officer, Billy. Like his colonel. After today I dunno's I'd blame him."
The grave wound to pride they'd received that afternoon would linger for a long time. In reality, Stubbins couldn't fathom why anyone would want to be part of the general's select group of officers at all. It certainly wasn't possible in his view to do that and remain as officer commanding of any regiment. But maybe it was different for German regiments. He felt his lip start to curl, just a little. The KGL sure hadn't done a whole lot today!
"Aye. A right pleasant evenin'." He couldn't keep the trace of bitterness from his voice, but then again, he didn't really try.

Re: 1st June, night; campfire
"When did I say that, soldier?" he asked, his voice sweet like poisoned honey.
Oh look... they're already making theories. The impertinent little rascal. And before him, to make it worse! Next time they'll try to get him a wife or something like that.
Thinking of it, would it be good to be Staff? Wilhelm was not sure. Of course, he would have liked promotion, but his hand woudl still be tied.

Re: 1st June, night; campfire
he looked between them as they 'discussed' this subject it was clearly to see they had two all entirely different point of views. But then again the one was an officer the other was the same rank as himself. The two always had different ways to act. He wasn't sure what to say himself but he just stood there and listened as he ran a hand through his messy hair which almost felt sticky after the battle the day prior and having had that damn hat on all day.

Re: 1st June, night; campfire
Stubbins affected a tone of disbelief. "Why ain't that what any hopeful officer wants, sir? Bein' part of Sir Arthur's family, what it's called. Now there's a sure way for bein' known."
Better than sticking with one's regiment, anyway. He doubted suddenly that this German's colonel was actually on the Staff. How could he be, and also maintain direct command of his regiment? Daft. That's what this all was.
"Wouldn't you say that's so, Will?" He directed the question at the bugler.

Re: 1st June, night; campfire
William nodded to stubbins and answered with an amused voice "aye, im sure ya right in that... who wouldn't want to?" he smiled slightly being the first smile for days now having forgotten the battle more or less for now looking forward to see how this is gonna develop and end in, probably stubbins in trouble.

Re: 1st June, night; campfire
"I like being in action better, myself" he said.
He knew a lot of generals who instead of being active held councils in in headquarters, planning the battle on a table. Miniature ships, cannons, armies of little soldiers... of course, no one would accuse them playing like boys but how many of these men thought of the soldiers as humans, rather than chess pieces? He didn't want to be like this. He liked to fight beside his men and lived for danger.

Re: 1st June, night; campfire
Of course he did. Shame most of yesterday's action had been well removed from wherever the German troopers had been.
"Reckon we'll be seein' plenty of that," Stubbins said stiffly. "Bein' on retreat an' without our baggage train. There's naught 'tween us an' them Frogs now."

Re: 1st June, night; campfire
"Boney might be the big guy ashore but at least on sea he gets one shame after another."
This was a bit comforting. The Frogs were no match for the English Navy, and Wilhelm had a great respect for their seafaring colleagues.

At sea? What the devil did that have to do with anything?
"Pity we ain't the Navy, I reckon, sir," Stubbins observed blithely.

Re: 1st June, night; campfire
William Wondered about the colonels point of view, and he agreed with stubbins although not saying anything, Will was glad he wasn't in the navy and why envy the navy they had on land caused more then little damage to napoleons army the frenchie had probably suffered alot of losses all he had seen it couldn't have went all silent for the french army "I'd agree with stubbins, sir... although i am sure we have caused alot of damage on land... sir.." he wasn't sure how the officer would react to the trooper telling his oppinion though hopefully not evil..

Re: 1st June, night; campfire
He only half listened what they said. Discussing strategy with common soldiers was definitely not what he needed after such a day, his mind was too tired to work properly, especially after the second smoke.
"We did indeed."
And he was bored to death by this conversation, though his eyes didn't show much of it. They were usually the same, cold and unpredictable.

"But sure not 'nuff to keep from gettin' knocked on our heels," Stubbins added blandly. No bloody thanks to those Germans. The 15th, at least, had done their duty well. "It's like Corunna all over again."

Re: 1st June, night; campfire
he wasn't sure what to say so he just stared into the fire and thought about why they tried to hold a conversation with an officer they rarely did any real conversing with the troopers although they were from different regiments but non the less it seemed like this one was no different, surprisingly enough. Will looked a bit over at stubbins when he mentioned corunna, he wasn't sure what had happened there atleast not out of remembering or atleast not from stubbins point of view

He didn't speak either. After finishing smoking his cigarillo, he briefly thought of having another, but it would be too much, maybe.
He put some more wood on the fire.

Re: 1st June, night; campfire
This wasn't worth it. The officer clearly hadn't been with them on the retreat, or he would have shown some recognition of the name. And poor Will there had no idea either, by virtue of missing out on that miserable winter. Equally, he didn't think for an instant that the man knew the first thing about what had happened earlier that day. Or if he did, he sure didn't understand the significance of it.
Stubbins straightened his back and rendered a salute he didn't consider this officer deserved but one that was required because of his having a commission where Stubbins didn't. "Sir," was all he said and even this was offered stiffly. Bloody Germans. "Will," he added with a glance at Ravenwood. Then he turned sharply on his heel and headed back toward the sputtering little fire around which his mates were huddled.
