Harrison nodded and made a face to show he was considering what Terry was saying, until he remembered that Terry couldn't see him either.

He shrugged despite himself, "Well... he does have to learn, y'know?" And Fletcher wasn't going to learn with everyone pulling him along and helping him up.

"But in any case..." he had nearly apologized for their getting in trouble, but that could easily be misconstrued as a slap in the face to Captain Bolitho, or whoever had disciplined them. "Er... uh- h-how'd you get into trouble, then?"

Terry shrugged. "'E slipped, sir - an' Mister Leat was watchin'. I fink... I fink 'e fought Mister Fletcher was... 'e oughtn't've needed 'elp. Well, not from me an' Fingers, any'ow. 'Cause... 'cause we's only boy, see, sir. Not... Mister Fletcher's a middy an', well..."

The unspoken thought was that an officer shouldn't show weakness in front of his inferiors. Whether that really was why Terry and Fingers had got into trouble, Terry didn't know, but it seemed to be the most likely explanation - they'd just been in the wrong place at the wrong time. That they had both been skiving at the time didn't even cross his mind.

"So... I fought, well, sir. 'E needs a bit of... of encouragin', like. But me an' the uvver boys..." he shrugged. "We can't give it. But if you know about goin' aloft, mebbe you can..."

And if Mister Bones told anyone about this talk, even Mister Fletcher, the consequences didn't bear thinking about.

Harrison nodded again. "Er- yeah. I know what you mean."

He looked around a bit in the half-dark, and wondered why it was Terry cared enough about Fletcher to bring it up like he had to another mid. If Harry wanted, he could go right ahead and get Terry into a big old pile of big old trouble. Not that he would, not Harry. Not unless Terry did anything to warrant it, anyway.

"Um. Terry... d'you wanna sit down for a bit?"

"Thanks," he said, finding a barrel to perch on. "Sorry, sir, di'n't mean to go an' talk your ears off like that," he said, feeling a bit sheepish at letting his mouth run away with him the way he had. If the mids weren't talking to each other, what business was it of his, after all?

"On'y, please don't tell 'im I telled you all that sir - ain't any of me business an'... an' I oughtn't've poked me nose in like that. I's awful sorry." He hoped like crazy that the midshipman wouldn't go getting him in trouble for it.

Harry took a seat on a barrel himself, and was very pleased when he had to hunch a little, sitting up high, because that meant he was getting taller. He grinned a bit without meaning to.

But then he frowned a bit more at the tone of Terry's voice. He was afraid that Harry would tell, he knew. Harry had no interest in being a snitch. And anyway, he didn't want Terry to be afraid of him. Not much good, is there, having a conversation with someone who was afraid to look at you. More like no, sir, yes, sir, thank you, sir.

No thank you, sir.

"Terry... I have a proposition for you," he said, suddenly.

A... what? Terry blinked at the long word. "What's one of them, then?" he asked, hoping that whatever one of those was, it was something nice.

He was fairly sure the middy wouldn't tell, but you could never be completely sure. And he had been pretty impertinent, poking his nose in like that, hadn't he? He shifted a little, uncomfortably.
