Computer failure

My laptop has died. Again. I'm pretty sure it's the hard drive, which I can't afford to replace right now.

At the moment, I'm using my old tower but it doesn't let me stay online for very long before giving out. So for now, until I can afford to repair my laptop, I'm going to be unable to post regularly, if at all.

Can you link an externel CD-ROM drive to your lappy and boot from that?

I could, maybe. The CD-ROM on my tower is offline (it's jammed itself shut somehow) but I might be able to try using Father's computer, if I can get the Internet to work on it.

This morning, I made the grave mistake of not powering up my tower first thing. Instead, I moved it across the room to where the other ethernet cable was set up. Upon setting it up again, I found that the monitor (LCD) wasn't receiving a signal from the tower. It was powering up but not getting any feed. So I dug out an old monitor (CRT) from the garage and tried it. Same thing.

Father's tower functions with both monitors fine, so obviously I've done something to my tower that makes it not want to work right. So now that's three problems I have to sort out. Fun times. But I think I can maybe figure out the monitor failure bit, as I'm at the library right now Google-bombing like a mad thing and writing down various possible fixes. For that and for my tower's apparent allergy to the Internet.

Not sure how I can get my laptop fixed though. That is pretty much beyond my non-existent skills.
