Saint-Hilaire relaxed, nodding to each of the introduced men. His good eye followed the introductions alertly, while he mentally repeated each of the names, so that he might remember it later and thus honour them as they deserved.

"Honoured to make the acquaintance." He spoke softly, giving a fairly smart salute. He felt awkward in such company and it showed. A low rumble was heard, quieting into a faint grunt. The sous-liuetenant's cheeks coloured red. "Pardon."

"Likewise, sir," Rougeau nodded towards the new arrival. Anything to distract him from that revolting food. He thought about giving the man a word of warning about said food, but then he decided that there was really no point. The man would find out about it soon enough anyway.

"No pardon necessary, sir!" Chevenier said. "We all know what it's like. Although, I warn you, this is the last time you'll find this food a relief."

"...At this moment I think I'd be delighted to eat anything." Though, he would have much preferred French cooking than what the British were not even eager to offer. "..but surely.. it can't be that bad?" He looked questionably towards Chevenier. "Sir."

"Best fear the worst, and then anything seems better," Chevenier replied with a laugh at the younger man's hesitant expression. "They don't spend much time worrying over the quality of the food."

"And they do not permit one of our own to show them how things are to be served?" He looked unsurprised, but amused never the less. He stood by the table, resting a hand against the hard surface and with it resting some weight against the wood.

" A French cook might have our hosts come in for dinner as well, sir." He smiled.

"Oh, they're French sure enough," Daubigny said. "At least the gentlemen I met in the kitchens were French. But I wouldn't call them cooks. They're fellow prisoners, you see. I suppose they can only cook with what's given to them."

".. Well if that is so.. the things given must be quite... basic." He bowed slightly, though he quickly regretted the action. Straightening somewhat stiffly he looked about. "...Are you long here?" He asked, having only arrived and wishing that he could return to the coast of France or perchance to the regiment's side. Whichever was quicker, more possible. But he would vouch not to wish returning to Portugal.

"Some of us have been here some time," Chevenier replied, "though Daubigny is newly arrived, like yourself."

He frowned slightly, glancing the man over. "Perhaps a bit of rest will do you no harm," he offered mildly.

"I will be glad to sit myself down." He studied Chevenier. "...May I inquire.." He hesitated as if torn between suggesting and waiting till he knew them better and was certain of whom to trust and who might betray such intentions to the English.

"...Do you miss your men?"

Re: English breakfast at Beckwith

Post  Nicolas Daubigny on Fri Apr 01, 2011 7:02 am

Daubigny laughed outright, but then feeling that perhaps it was impolite, he covered his laughter with a cough.

"I miss my steward," he said, lifting his spoon to examine the slop. "I miss the ship, and the sea, but no, I don't think I miss the men." He had not given them much thought at all, in fact. That was the captain's concern, not his. But now that he stopped to consider them, he realized that they must all be languishing away in some desolate rotting hulk in the south. Poor beggars. He grimaced at the newcomer, wishing the fellow had not brought their fate to his mind. "There's nothing I can do for them now, at any rate," he added, almost defensively.

Re: English breakfast at Beckwith

Post  Étienne Saint-Hilaire on Fri Apr 01, 2011 7:20 am

"Indeed. Perhaps it is so." He would have wished to know the whereabouts of his own. Those who were imprisoned would suffer a less pleasant fate than the officers. "..Have you no idea at all.. nothing you might have heard, of where they might have been taken to? Is the premesis we are in...reserved thus solely for ourselves.. and so the distant and near range of town?"

Étienne had only then realised that he had forgotten himself with the vigour he spoke and asked, as if wishing to stand up just then and to march out and return to the battlefield untill the war was over or he was dead. He bowed his head in apology. "...Excuse me...for.. I have spoken in haste.."

"Not at all," Chevenier replied, waving a hand.

He paused, rubbing contemplatively at his chin. "Not entirely sure where our men may have been taken. There certainly only seem to be officers within our range of freedom." He offered a rueful smile. "Perhaps they worry that we would outnumber them, else. For my part, I rather hope that at least some of my men evaded capture. They were a loyal, brave group."

"I see. Thank you for your answer though it brings me less hope in seeing them well again..." He sighed for though he was in pain still he thoughts were on returning, where he would be of use in fighting.

"May I ask that there is someone to enlighten me in the ways of this place.. and the goings and comings ..of all things, our guards included?" He spoke politely.

Re: English breakfast at Beckwith

Post  Nicolas Daubigny on Sun Nov 20, 2011 3:47 pm

"That's what I want to know too," Daubigny mumbled, nodding as he swallowed another spoonful of gruel. "I'm new here myself." He had previously pushed the bowl away, and now he remembered why. Disgusting stuff. But he did not need to suffer it any longer, for a guard was shouting orders in his incomprehensible English dialect. In response, other prisoners in the room rose from their seats and began piling their dirty bowls on large trays. "Breakfast is over?" he asked his neighbors.

"Where did you serve?" Saint-Hilaire asked, and looked at the plate. He listened, but ignored the English shouting. It seemed to bring a rise to the other prisoners however. He archd a brow. Whatever the order may have been, it had to do with them leaving. For a brief moment Étienne felt hope that perhaps in some miraculous event they had been attacked by the French and they would have opportunity to escape. Then, he reminded himself, that they were far out of reach and he frowned.

"Seems so." He answered Nicolas, though he doubted the question was meant for him. He was as ignorant of it, as the other, being new. "Do you speak any of that infernal language? A few words, even?"

Daubigny was about to answer the first question when the guard interrupted him, barking out his orders again. "I thought I spoke English pretty well," he said with a grimace. "But I can't understand a thing that man is saying."

The recent turn taken by the conversation had only worsened an already foul mood and Jarreau pushed wordlessly to his feet, snatched up his bowl and joined the line.

Swallowing a sigh, Leveque followed his example at a more leisurely pace. "I find context helps immensely," he remarked to the other two gentlemen with a small smile.

"Think....considering.." He glanced at the other prisoners. "That if I was to make an uneducated guess, I'd say they did say the breakfast is over and that we should leave here..to return to our quarters." He glanced int the direction of Jarreau then Leveque.

"Is it always the same?" He asked politely.

"Then it will be exactly like naval food," Daubigny responded. "And what now? Is there a way we can get our clothes washed? This is the uniform I marched in." Being a naval man, he was not at all accustomed to marching for days on muddy roads and sheep paths.

"Oh, certainly," exclaimed Leveque, an eager assertion which was followed almost immediately by a slightly embarrassed pause, for unlike some of the other officers, he was fortunate enough to have been allowed to keep his batman with him and was thus ignorant of details of some of the more menial tasks. "We should ask Pelletier," he said, recovering. "He will know the best way."

"Sir?" an answering voice came from nearby. Pelletier and the few other servants who had been fortunate enough to come to prison with their officers generally ate near the back of the hall. The prison offered no official division between officers and the handful of men, but the men preferred to keep separate.
