His attempt to smile failed miserably. The throbbing in his head wouldn't allow such gestures.

"Prime stuff," he croaked. "Better than the swill they gave us in the army!"

He peered blearily at the grey slop in his bowl before digging his spoon into it. "Gives a man a fine appetite anyway."

"I would not complain about what they gave us in the army." Lechat commented, noting, with some amusement, the discomfort of Blanchard. "Better than what they are eager to sell us here." He added poking his cutlery at the mash and seating himself down beside the pair, uninvited.

"Indeed," Rougeau remarked as Lechat seated himself, "I would take army food any day over this mush." He scooped up a spoonful and then let it plop back down into the bowl with an unappetizing splat. "Compared to this, the food they serve in the army is a feast."

Re: English breakfast at Beckwith

Post  Nicolas Daubigny on Thu Oct 21, 2010 4:11 pm

"Isn't the food cooked by prisoners?" Daubigny asked. "I saw French officers down in the kitchens yesterday." Though being French did not necessarily mean they would be decent cooks or capable of producing anything appetizing with the meager ingredients they were given. "And what about those gardens? Do they grow anything that's edible?"

The porridge was tasteless, but Blanchard bolted it down as though it were a gourmet meal. He was ravenous.

"Oh the food was not bad," he admitted, "but the wine? Pah!"

"What do you expect? The English are like Germans - far more fond of their beer than their wine," Chevenier said with a light laugh.

He smiled at Daubigny. "I don't doubt that the food is cooked by prisoners," he said. "Goodness knows it is something to do, but it's still English food they're cooking." He thought a bit about the gardens. "I doubt much is edible in the gardens, however. They are quite beautiful," he added, "I will say that much, but English gardens are all flowers and no food."

He shook his head mournfully. "It makes you wonder how so many of them are so fat."

"Economy, I'm afraid, is more to blame than the provenance of the dish itself," Leveque commented mildly, "It can hardly be expected that our enemy will choose a more costly method of sustaining us when an inexpensive one will suffice. Certainly not while the war lasts."

"Ah, Leveque," Chevenier laughed, "your good sense conspires against fun at the expense of the British! Well, then - let us hope for a swift victory to return us to our wives and good food."

Lechat finished a spoonful of his porridge. "You don't need the food to be of quality..., sometimes the worst food is the fattiest." He made a face. The meal they were given was not going down his throat well at all. "..Do they have roses in the garden, I forget." He inquired gazing up. "....no herbs, do you say? Nothing that we might mix in to give the gruel some taste?"

He was too young to be married, but he did raise his hand as if he would a glass. "A swift victory to us, and our return to our wives and sweethearts, you forget." He grinned.

"Had I a glass, sir, I would certainly drink to that,” Leveque affirmed enthusiastically. His smile, however, faded somewhat and Jarreau guessed – correctly – that he was thinking of his wife. Poor René. Jarreau counted himself fortunate that he had no such ties to their homeland. It was bad enough being separated from his men.

Leveque recovered quickly, latching onto the most recent comment. “You object to the animals, Blanchard?”

Lechat turned to the men:" Are there roses.. that have a sweet smell, that would be in our garden and are in flower?" He asked again. "Or there be any fruit trees that they permit us in having...? Has any one of you noticed anything that could be herb like?" True, he had been there himself, but he was not one to bend down and see if a rose smelled or not, and whether the green on the ground was just grass or a herb, good for placing into a soup or a stew.

"Herb-like?" Chevenier echoed, amused. "Not that I have noticed, but I doubt I am quite who you should ask on that account. There are very few I'd recognize."

He thought for a moment, and then shrugged once again. Chevenier was many things, but cook and farmer were not among them. However, he did spend time in Beckwith's gardens - he had always enjoyed being out of doors.

"Roses they certainly have," he said, "though they are just beginning to bloom. I would wager that they will indeed smell sweet." Was there such thing as a rose that did not, he wondered. It mattered little either way - they would still be pleasant to look at. "Aiming to find a British sweetheart, Lechat?" he teased.

Lechat scoffed and shook his head, though his cheeks did colour a little. "I would not know why you would think so!" He exclaimed, and was silent for the duration that he needed to gulp down another spoonfull of food. When it was again possible to speak, without making oneself appear uncultured, he did. ".. I have asked about roses because.. I have read a long time ago that it is possible to make something sweet with it. Given, you do have all the other ingredients of the recipe at hand." He shrugged and frowned.

"'Have your eyes been caught by an English face?" He inquired instead with a grin. "Judge another by how you yourself are?"

"Indeed not, sir," Chevenier said with a frown. He waved a hand as if brushing off the very idea.

"As if any woman in England could compare to my fair Félicité," he scoffed. He glanced away, feeling decidedly less cheerful than he had. Shaking his head, trying to banish the image of his wife and children, he looked back to Lechat. "Something sweet from the roses, you say?"

"Indeed. I have read that it is possible to make a sort of jam from their petals." He said, and regretted he had spoken of a lady knowing enough to conclude the man as faithful. " But it is so that the stronger and sweeter their scent, the better their taste."

Jarreau paused, the spoon halfway to his mouth, and gave Daubigny a disgusted look. Puns... He grimaced. If this kept up, he would be lucky if he wasn't chasing bloody moonbeams like Rousseau by the time the month was out.

Leveque chuckled, "A bit unusual perhaps, but any change, I think, would be most welcome." From beside him came the clatter of Jarreau's spoon falling into the empy bowl. "You going to eat that?" he asked, gesturing pointedly at Leveque's dish, "Or have a theoretical discussion about it?"

Leveque leaned forward abruptly, sheltering the bowl with the crook of his arm. By way of an answer, he raised the spoon to his lips, managing to smirk around a mouthful of gruel.

Daubigny was rather pleased with himself, and with Chevenier's reaction. Clearly he was a man of taste and intelligence.

Unlike the men who had cooked their breakfast. The lieutenant pushed the bowl away, his distaste finally winning out over his hunger. "So what now? How do you spend your days? Or how do we spend our days, I should say."

"Well," Chevenier replied, "that very much depends. As Blanchard has illustrated," he gestured at the other man's slumped posture and ashen face, "you can spend your time in the inn, drinking their stores. There are some who have taken it upon themselves to attempt a theatrical pursuit, some who garden..." A grin. "Some who play cards."

Leaning back in his chair, Chevenier shrugged. "There are other things as well." He waved a hand vaguely at a man across the room. "I believe that Beaumont there has begun giving lessons in French and Latin to some of the young Englishmen."
