Post  Nicolas Daubigny Wed Oct 20, 2010 2:52 pm

Daubigny stumbled into the room that had been made into a mess hall, still rubbing at his eyes and his chilled, aching limbs. He hoped there would at least be something hot to warm him from inside and fill his complaining belly.

"Where's yer bowl?" asked the impudent man serving out some sort of slop. He did not even bother to address him as sir, but Daubigny was too tired and confused to care.

"Bowl?"

"You need a bowl," grumbled the man standing next to him in the queue.

"But I haven't got a bowl," Daubigny protested.

"Oi. Daubi-whatever the hell your name is," called Jarreau, jerking his thumb toward the wall behind them, "Cupboard. Bowls."

English breakfast at Beckwith Untitled-3

Chevenier raised an eyebrow at the naval officer ahead of him. Clearly, the man was newly brought to Beckwith. Their guards were not exactly forthcoming with the workings of the prison, and it would seem no one had thought to warn him of the need to procure his own supplies. Jarreau likely just wanted the line to move faster.

Leaning forward, Chevenier tapped Daubigny lightly on the shoulder, and held out his own bowl in offering. "Do not trouble yourself, sir - they will certainly force you to the end of the line after," he said mildly. "You may use mine." He glanced contemptuously down at the sludge masquerading as porridge. "I'm afraid I find myself rather without appetite this morning."

Which was almost true - he certainly did not relish the taste or consistency of the food, but he had learned to tolerate it. However, the other man likely needed a warm meal. Besides, Chevenier needed a new companion for playing cards - many of the other French prisoners had already learned that he cheated abominably.

Daubigny stared at the man, amazed by his civility. "Thank you, sir. It's a pleasure to meet a fellow gentleman at last!" And he cast a little frown upon his neighbor in the queue.

On receiving his spoonful of slop, he could see why the man had decided to skip breakfast. But even though it looked unappetizing, Daubigny was hungry. He still had a healthy appetite. "I'll have some more of that, thank you," he said to the serving man.

"Move along," the server grumbled, jerking his head to the side.

Stepping out of line, as he no longer needed to wait, Chevenier smiled. "Not at all." He gestured the other man to precede him towards the tables. "Please," he said, "sit by me."

One of the other men in line snorted a laugh, no doubt someone that had recently been soundly beaten at cards, but he ignored it. He was allowed to socialize, even outside of gambling. He sketched a slight bow, and held out a hand. "Capitaine Jean-Fabrice Chevenier, at your service."

"I'm without appetite every morning they serve this muck," Rougeau grumbled, having heard the exchange between Chevenier and Daubigny.

He had not minded Daubigny holding up the line. It meant he had a brief moment before he had to receive the slop he was going to be forced to eat for what seemed the thousandth time. As the porridge was poured into his bowl, he made a noise of disgust and frowned. Could these blasted English find nothing better with which to feed them?

Jarreau took a seat beside Leveque, noticing with distaste that his friend had chosen the table toward which Chevenier was guiding the newcomer. "You are in a fouler temper than usual, Sebastien," Leveque observed cheerfully.

"You'd be as well, if you'd been kept up half the night by that one's nattering. You sleep like the dead, you know that?"

"It tastes of ash," Daubigny said after his first disgusting mouthful. "Do they just incinerate what's left from the night before and serve it to us at breakfast?" He wondered when they could leave the prison grounds to walk about the town. Perhaps he could buy some better food there, and a cup of coffee or tea.

He glanced over at the two bickering men. "Was it one of you who was snoring?" he asked. He had not been able to recognize his neighbors in the dark.

Leveque stared at the lieutenant in mild bewilderment -- it was certainly an odd way to begin a conversation -- then Jarreau elbowed him and his face immediately took on a look of contrition. "Was I? I'm dreadfully sorry. Allow me to introduce myself: Capitaine Rene Leveque and my ill-mannered friend here is Lieutenant Sebastien Jarreau. You are new here, are you not?"

"Welcome to Beckwith then, lieutenant," Leveque announced, grinning amicably, "If one can say such a thing of this place. Nevermind though. It is not so bad once one gets used to it. Isn't that right, Sebastien?"

Jarreau, however, merely grunted something noncommittal and returned to wolfing down his ration of porridge.

Chevenier chuckled slightly. "I will agree with you in his stead, Leveque," he said cheerfully. "One eventually learns to tolerate the food and the cold, and I'd daresay that I've been in worse places. At least the company is all French!"

"I've been in worse places too," Daubigny hastened to say. "But usually there was some hope of a change. A wind to carry us out of the doldrums, or safe harbor at the end of a perilous voyage. But what about this? How long will this last?"

Chevenier waved a hand dismissively. "It will end when it ends," he said. "Unless we are paroled back to France - unlikely, I'm sure - he is right. But what is the use of worrying about that now? We make the best of it."

He smiled at his new friend. "We all shared your feeling at first. You will learn to accept it."

Jarreau snorted. "By remembering you got a roof over your head and food in your belly, for starters."

"Really, Jarreau."

"What?" he demanded, annoyed that his friend should take the stranger's side in this, but Leveque ignored him and turned his attention back to the naval lieutenant. "It is really not so bad as it seems at first and we find ways to pass the time. For instance, Chevenier here is an excellent hand at cards." He tried to smile encouragingly.

"I am quite fond of cards," Chevenier agreed with a grin. "And it is always something to do, if you find yourself looking for a game."

He let the smile drop, and leaned forward. "We do what we can," he said seriously. "We remember that we were not killed, and that it will eventually end. It is not the war, no, but it truly could be worse. We are permitted to walk within a mile of the castle. We are not locked away. We have food. There are always ways of learning to accept it."

With a sigh, Chevenier leaned back. "It is no use fretting over being taken from the fray, my friend. That way lies madness."

There was a clatter from close by, rather like a spoon falling to the floor. A hoarse, heartfelt curse closely followed it. A moment later, a wan-faced Henri Blanchard all but collapsed into a chair at the table, clutching a bowl of porridge.

"Damn me," he rasped, "but they serve some wonderful stuff at that inn!"

Lachat made a face as the porridge was slapped into his bowl. Always the same. And not the pleasant sort of same either. "...They could let us have a French cook. That would almost make up for the cold rooms." He coughed and cleared his throat.
