Re: Frogs in the Parlour

Post  Maggie Cotton on Sun Oct 17, 2010 10:18 am

"What are you lot doing?" Maggie asked accusingly as she entered the sitting room with an armload of bloody garments and rags. She eyed the strangers warily, dripping mud and water on the floor and at least two wearing uniforms of the French army. She did not recognize the third uniform, but she didn't trust it at all. Still, she disapproved of the pools they were making.

She frowned at the sailors as she dumped her laundry pile on the floor. "Can't you find sommat dry for them to wear so they don't ruin the rug? I'm doin' a wash for that lieutenant. They can give me their muddy things and put on some of those white robes meanwhile." She crossed to the wardrobe and opened the door, yelping in surprise at what she found.

lying in an awkward position, what came to blink at her and the bright light that made his eyes tear up, was another Frenchman. He was momentarily stunned and then burst through the door and at her, stumbling over the fabric that he had laid entangled in. He grabbed her across the shoulders, thinking to use her as hostage. His eyes had to adapt to the light, but they were no longer blinking as furiously as before. "Excuse me." He spoke in French to Maggie.

The Frenchman tried to grab hold of Maggie's hands and twist them into a harmless position where they might not completely blind him or make worse with any of the wounds that were not so old in making." Woman, be still! You won't be harmed if you cooperate." If only he was able to say the same in English. French was probably not the woman's tongue of understanding.

The Frenchman could not keep his hold on the woman. When the fist made contact he released her and stumbled backward, back into the wardrobe. He ducked low, and delivered a blow at the seaman's knee, in an attempt to bring him to the ground.

"What is going on? Who is that in there?" Daubigny demanded in indignant French, bounding over to the wardrobe. He attempted to regain his composure enough to form a phrase in English. "Who in that?" he asked, pointing.

Re: Frogs in the Parlour

Post  Étienne Saint-Hilaire on Sun Oct 17, 2010 10:01 pm

Saint-Hilaire was not interested in remaining inside the wardrobe when he did not know when it might get set aflame or when it might be shot at. He thumped both feet against the door, shifted a gain and pressed himself against the other side, kicking his legs forward again. The wood held, but the hinges were becoming worn with the stress. He had heard someone speak in French. "Monseur!" He called out, but felt bemused. Did the man speak French by nature and birth or by learning? Was he an enemy or did the French just invade the house and he would be freed?

This was truly a strange place. Jérémie watched in dumbfounded surprise as the woman opened the wardrobe and revealed a fourth Frenchman. The ensuing scuffle was heated as it was brief.

And, despite knowing better, he chuckled quietly. It was all so absurd.

There was another Frenchman out there, certainly. He had it. With a final kick at the door, he managed to bring the hinges to crack and splinter. Another shove and the door could come down, locked or unlocked.

Post  Jacob Chase on Mon Oct 25, 2010 2:14 am

This was insane. Why keep that Frog penned up in the wardrobe of all places, when there were three others standing free's you please in the same room.

"What's the fuss over?" He asked in bewilderment.

Heavy footsteps behind him made him turn. "Yankees," a hulking redcoat announced, as two shabby blue coated men shuffled resentfully in.

"Yankees and Frogs?" Billy exclaimed in dismay. He was leaning with his shoulder against the wardrobe door, but it seemed that the man within would soon be destroying the entire piece of furniture from inside. Billy glared at the French officer and spoke. "He just better mind his manners is all. Right, Miss, stand back 'cause I'm lettin' him out." He pushed the chair away and unlocked the wardrobe door, then stepped back lest the Frenchman should burst out in a whirlwind of violence again.

There was no whirlwind of violence when the door was opened. The Frenchman waited then slowly sat up. He pushed himself away from the wall and walked out.

"Merci." He looked rather bemused at seeing the French with the British and nobody much brandishing a weapon. Cautiously he took a step away from the wardrobe with his back though still to the wall.

Re: Frogs in the Parlour

Post  Tide Evans on Mon Oct 25, 2010 1:55 pm

It was getting crowded in here. Between their 'guests' and those appointed to keep wary eyes on them, as well as those not, Tide wondered when the next disagreement might happen.

"You two lads want dry slops or somethin'?' He asked the two men with their longtailed blue coats. They, at least, weren't French. His offer was met with a sullen glare and stony silence.

Right then.

Post  Maggie Cotton on Mon Oct 25, 2010 2:11 pm

Recovering her composure, Maggie crossed to the wardrobe, still cautious lest more Frenchmen spring out from it. "I was just gettin' them two French lads some of them white robes. I'm doin' a wash anyway. Oh look, you got it all dirty!" she exclaimed with dismay, pulling out a bathrobe and showing it to the Frenchman who had been in the wardrobe. "Well that one can go to your mates, and this one." She handed the robes across to Evans.

The woman was complaining about something and showing him a strange sort of fabric, which she then handed over to the other man. He did saw a bit of dirt on it, and guessed that that might have been the reason of her distress.

Before he could try making more sense, the girl was already off, saying something in fact, but again in her own, English. "That's a daft man." He commented in french looking at Billy before he took the side with the Frenchmen. "...Can you give me a report...of what is this place.... and what is going on?" He addressed Blanchard.
