Re: Frogs in the Parlour

Post  Étienne Saint-Hilaire on Thu Mar 03, 2011 5:39 pm

"Certainly, sir." Though surprised the man had earlier been willing to put his life in the hands of a Britishman, he felt relieved he had finally seen sense. He excused himself with the miss, and went to take another glass into which he poured his chosen bottle of wine. He held it to Nicolas. "Here it is then, sir."

He turned about, and since his bandage had been covering one of his eyes, leaving it blind to the side, he had only then noticed the third Frenchman. And blinked startled and surprised at the revelation.

"..Ah." He uttered and gave a short nod to the soldat.

Re: Frogs in the Parlour

Post  Nicolas Daubigny on Fri Mar 04, 2011 3:18 pm

"How lucky you soldiers are, to have beautiful women always with you," Daubigny said, nodding at the cantinière. "Naval life is not nearly so comfortable." He sank into an easy chair by the fire, the one vacated earlier by his dripping companion, and sipped at the glass. "Ah, brandy. This is much better. At ease, lads; you don't have to drink the yellow stuff."

"But it has you walk little to go great distances." Saint-Hilaire replied and gazed briefly at the man. "And still have a sweetheart in every port... or is this what only the Rosbifs do have?" He inclined his head in the direction in which he guessed the British to be.

He sipped his own wine thoughtfully. "That yellow stuff must be vile...it surely looks most terrible."

Re: Frogs in the Parlour

Post  Jack Deverel on Wed Mar 16, 2011 10:05 pm

Before Daubigny couold answer, the wounded British lieutenant returned, looking quite pale and weak as he clutched at the bandage wrapped around his shoulder. He had lost his shirt, probably in that pile of things taken away by Maggie Cotton, and several other scars could be seen about his body as mementos of his daring and foolhardy career. He seemed not to mind that there was a woman present, and neither did she mind his state of undress.

"Bastard wouldn't give me a drink," Deverel gasped, stumbling towards the bar. "Quick, gimme something, my good man. Brandy. French brandy if you've got it," before dropping into the seat next to the Frenchmen and staring about him in a daze. He picked up a familiar looking glass and bottle. "Did I drink the whole thing? I don't remember drinking the whole thing. It was too sweet so I added lime juice, you see." And suddenly he was very tired. The wing chairs were comfortable when one had difficulty keeping his head up. He nuzzled into the corner of the high-backed chair with a pale smile as he waited. The tavern cat jumped up to share the chair, and he stroked her with a silly grin on his face.

Re: Frogs in the Parlour

Post  Jenny Ross on Thu Mar 31, 2011 8:30 am

Jenny strode into the room and helped herself to a magazine before turning with a slight frown to look again at the occupants of the room. There were a couple of the naval fellows that she recognized, but she was surprised to realize that the rest were strangers.

"Who are you?" she bluntly asked the nearest one of them.

"A drink? Are you quite certain that it is something that should be of benefit to you?" Though asking such a question and quite surprised at the appearance of this man, looking in a most unbecoming state, he moved to the counter where most of the drinks were stored. There he looked about, until he found a drink that might be to the man's liking and showed the bottle to him. Indeed, this man had to be drunk, but it was not his business to deny him drink for it. "Would this suffice?"

Not a moment too soon, did another new arrival show her face. "..Good day, miss... Sous-lieutenant Saint-Hilaire." He introduced himself. "I regret being unable to tell you the name of that man." He indicated Deverel.

Jenny opened her mouth and then shut it, staring at the stranger in surprise. A French officer! She looked at the man he was indicating and said, "That's Lieutenant Deverel, the man who was shot. What - where - You're French?" she finally managed to say. She looked at the others suspiciously, wondering what was going on. Had the Crown been invaded?

"Yes, I am indeed French." He gave a small shrug, tilting the bottle a bit, to read what it said about its contents. The fact that they were all here and not fighting was confusing but he accepted so far so, as he did not have neither the army, nor the weapons.

"And.. you are English. May I learn of your name, miss?"

Post  Étienne Saint-Hilaire on Thu Mar 31, 2011 9:01 am

"...." With a patient smile he lowered the bottle and responded in kind: " My name is Étienne Saint-Hilaire. It is a pleasure to meet you." Though his new found ability to understand a language he had never before spoken - granted by this strange world - he still wondered if some words could be taken out of context and then in a bad way and whether he ought to be cautious of them.

Re: Frogs in the Parlour

Post  Harry Quinn (Retired) on Thu Mar 31, 2011 9:03 am

Quinn pushed open the door. He had his hat under his arm and found himself in need of a drink. His own newly-promoted corporal was in another room and looked as though he needed to relax without any superiors there to spoil his day.

He could hear voices, but it wasn't until he was mostly through the door that he registered the men were all in French uniform.

Re: Frogs in the Parlour

Post  Jérémie Blanchard on Thu Mar 31, 2011 9:14 am

Having lost interest in the possible effects of that strange pale-green drink, Jérémie had wandered back toward the armchairs. He dropped down wearily into one and stretched out languidly, enjoying the heat radiating from the merrily-crackling fire. It didn't seem important to him that his luxurious white robe had come open a little, for he hadn't tied it closed.

If this was a prison, he could certainly come to like it!

Jenny frowned at the man in the short white robe - or rather, one of several men in short white robes. What on earth was going on?

"What are you wearing?" she asked. Not that her sensibilities were offended. She was far too much a woman of the world to mind that. But the whole situation was quite confusing.

Saint-Hilaire looked amused. The robes that the French fellows were wearing appeared rather inconvenient and they were just too fluffy to imagine a man wearing. He chuckled and poured himself some more wine. Well, if the woman did not like it, she could look the other way. He glanced briefly towards the redcoat. Hm, it was getting rather crowded indeed.

Quinn hurriedly revised his first thought - some of the men were wearing fluffy white robes. Had he somehow stumbled into Bedlam? He looked around for someone who could make sense of what was going on for him.

She tried again in French. "What... the robe white... Ugh." She waved her hand dismissively, deciding it was not worth the bother. She knew already that the Crown was an inexplicable place at the best of times. But then she remembered something else. She had heard musket shots earlier, and she knew that Lieutenant Deverel had been treated for an injury.

"Where are - what muskets of who?" she asked, pointing at Deverel. Had he been shot by one of these Frenchmen?

It was getting crowded. Though he attempted to follow all of the events taking place, and tried not to miss out on a conversation that would have been addressed to him or to the French in general, he did take a while untill he decided to answer atleast some of Jenny's questions.

"...I do not know who had fired at him, or why he is injured... But I will suppose the ropes are being worn as their uniforms have been taken to be washed.. and this is all they could find to wear."

He paused and observed the redcoat wondering if he would become a friend or be the foe. He looked like he wanted to make sense as well of why there was such a great amount of white fluffy things on men.

Jenny stared at the Frenchman and tried to follow his speech. She caught only the first part: "I do not know." Well that wasn't helpful at all.

She shrugged. "Oh well." Nobody was waving weapons about in the parlour, at any rate.

It was quite annoying that the English did not understand French. "...miss." But he knew not a word of English then. "... ..Their robes." He indicated the French. "...Dirty." He indicated his own shirt and trousers. "...To clean. "he took a rag from the counter and rubbed it against the counter to show what the word meant. He went to the counter and there began to pour water across it. "That is all." Well as for the man he did not know and he did not think he wanted to explain more about it.

And that later question was answered, if he guessed what it meant. He arched a brow and looked around at the other man.

Seeing that he was not being addressed and that his input wasn't required, Jérémie settled back into his chair. There was no denying this chair was comfortable. The English sure knew how to live.

He yawned, scratched indelicately at himself, and let his eyes droop shut. Maybe if he took a nap, the other people crowding the room behind him would go away.

Jenny raised her eyebrows at the man's distaste for Englishmen, but she could hardly blame him. She disliked plenty of Englishmen herself, so she was not going to argue that point.

"But why did you want to leave?" she asked. It was pouring down rain outside, and if the man was firing a musket, he was obviously not one of the locals. "Where were you going?"
