28 May; Discussions
From here.
Now that the court-martial was over, Trevor could turn his attention to a slightly lesser headache. Namely, the mannerless idiot who had barged in demanding to see him.
With the tent suitably emptied at last, he resumed his seat and took a much-needed swallow of wine. This was going to be mildly more enjoyable than presiding over a court-martial, but not by much.
"Now. Explain yourself. Sir."

Re: 28 May; Discussions
After hearing Trevor ask for someone named "Woodpecker," it had taken a moment for Woodmarsh to realise that the colonel was referring to him. He was more than a little annoyed that Trevor had bungled his name, and so he made a point to re-introduce himself to the colonel as he approached the table.
"Lieutenant Woodmarsh, sir. I was told to report to you." Frankly, he did not see what there was to explain. Was the colonel dense? What was so hard to understand about that?

Re: 28 May; Discussions
Right. Woodmarsh. Whatever.
"So you have already said." Trevor suppressed an irritated sigh. "Did you not think it imprudent to interrupt a formal legal proceeding in the manner you chose? Or are you even capable of such involved cerebral function?"

Re: 28 May; Discussions
It was one thing to accuse him of being imprudent; it was another thing entirely to insult his intelligence. After all, what had he interrupted? A trial for a few ragamuffin soldiers? That was hardly a formal legal proceeding, and did not seem to be something with which he should concern himself.
"I am quite capable of involved cerebral function, sir," Woodmarsh replied. Perhaps the colonel really was dense to think that he was stupid for doing what he had been told. "I was merely following orders, but it seems you would wish me to do otherwise."

"I would expect officers in my regiment to exercise some sense!" Trevor countered sharply. "Did your orders include a direction to invite yourself into a superior officer's tent with complete disregard for propriety? This is not a free and easy common Line regiment, for God's sake!"

Re: 28 May; Discussions
The colonel's condescension and insulting remarks were angering Woodmarsh a good deal, but he forced himself to hold his tongue. No matter how incompetent Trevor might be, it would not do for him to completely infuriate his superior officer. And since it seemed he already had irritated the colonel a good deal, Woodmarsh thought it best not to argue too much--for now.
"No, my orders did not include any such direction," he said, then added quietly, "Do forgive my impropriety, sir."

Re: 28 May; Discussions
Trevor seethed, but made an effort to contain his temper. "I may, in time. If your sense of good judgment shows improvement. Have you anything to report, or are you only here to join my regiment?"

Re: 28 May; Discussions
Finally the colonel had gotten to the point. Woodmarsh had been near to thinking that Trevor might get so involved in his reprimanding that the colonel would have entirely forgotten to discuss why he had come to the tent in the first place.
"I'm here to join your regiment, sir. I fear I have nothing to report which you would not already know." Incompetent old fool, Woodmarsh added to himself.

Re: 28 May; Discussions
No, of course not. For a moment, Trevor considered the wisdom of finding out who had given Woodlouse his orders, then decided it wasn't worth the effort. It was better to get rid of this fop as soon as possible.
"Very well. You have reported to me and accordingly become part of this regiment. I think... yes. The Light Company will do for you. Captain Blackwood commands there. He shall find good use for you, I expect. That will be all."

Re: 28 May; Discussions
Well thank God for that. At last the colonel was dismissing him. The sooner he got away from the ignorant man, the better.
"Thank you sir," Woodmarsh replied, sounding much more pleased now that he was being dismissed. He could only hope that this Captain Blackwood would be a more sensible fellow than the colonel.
He gave a quick salute, then turned and headed for the tent flap.

"Yes yes. Get out."
Trevor was not at all sorry to see the back of the man. Were he in a more charitable mood, he might have felt a measure of pity for Captain Blackwood, having now to deal with such a fellow. Instead, the colonel was only relieved that Woodgrain was no longer his own direct concern.
What an evening!
