Chasing the French Empty Chasing the French

Kyle was on horseback, he wasn't to happy with things. his collar was let loose due to the fact the higher ups weren't nearby, plus he was tired. Kyle looked around watching the faces of the 95th as they marched forwards. They were chasing the remaining French forces after the battle of Oporto which had gone in their favour. It was quite something. Kyle had been in some of the worst conditions but to him that was one of the worst, since the 95th was on the front along with the other regiments. A canon ball had nearly taken off his head. He was a lucky guy. His uniform was still dirty from the fighting, and was also wet from the rain that poured on them.

Kyle took off his cap for a quick second, then placed it back upon his head. Kyle kept a straight posture while riding. He didn't want to look like a lazy fool. He also didn't want to give his men the wrong idea. Kyle looked around, he was looking for his colour sergeant. Kyle called for him to come forward.

OOC: sorry for the short post...

Despite the damp from the recent rains and the attendant chill in the air, Sergeant Goodwin was in a cheerful mood. He enjoyed being on campaign, even through all the hardships. This was what the life of a fighting soldier was all about. Moreso, this was what being a Rifleman was all about.

"Sir," Goodwin called in reply, moving briskly toward his captain upon being summoned. His pack and rifle clanked as he offered a precise salute to the officer.

Kyle smiled at the sergeant, before looking forward at the path ahead. Kyle then returned back to the Sergeant then gave him a salute back. "sergeant do you know how far ahead the french would be? I'm just wondering since, the troops seem to be a bit tired out, and we haven't set camp for awhile..." Kyle asked keeping his horse steady. Kyle was a bit annoyed at the fact that half the troops had not gotten any sleep due them either having to stay on guard duty, or spy on french positions. Kyle was one of those soldiers as well. He had spent his time getting to know his "brothers".

Kyle looked around for the other officers and then back to Goodwin. "Would you know where the other officers would be? I haven't seen or heard from any of them in quite some time." Kyle asked again, he didn't want to be a bother, but he was kept out of a lot, and his officers hadn't reported where they were.

"Reckon they're a ways ahead, sir," Goodwin replied. "By the rate they're dumpin' they baggage, I'd s'pose they've got five mile on us, least."

Not that a good bit of fast marching through the night couldn't cut down that distance, though. But the army wasn't quite as tough as it had been when Goodwin had been a private.

"I seen a couple other officers over yon, sir," Goodwin went on. "Just across the column."

Chasing the French Empty Re: Chasing the French

Kyle looked at the area the colour was pointing in. He was right, in every way. The french did have quite the lead on them, and it was going to be hard to catch up to them, that is if they stop to make camp. Kyle could go another night without sleep, so keeping with the march wouldn't bother him. Just a lot of the troops would complain; mostly due to the fact they hadn't slept in a few days.

Kyle's eyes then shifted back at the colour, as he pointed out where the other officers would be. Kyle nodded in reply. "Thank you colour sergeant, you're help was much needed, and well appreciated." Kyle told the colour in a kind tone. Kyle then made his way towards where the other officers should be, but not before he gave the colour a salute.

"Yes sir," Goodwin said, and waited until the captain was gone before departing himself.

~

Lieutenant Pratt was short of tobacco. He had discovered this when he tried to find the leather pouch he used to store the leaf in. It was dangerously close to empty. Not good. None of the other officers he asked had any leaf to spare either. It was distressing.

Finally, after several futile enquiries, Pratt found an ensign from the 27th with a couple pinches of tobacco he was willing to part with. The price was higher than Pratt would normally be willing to pay, but desperation loosened his purse strings. He could mourn the loss of precious coin later. For now, he had enough tobacco to fill his pipe.

On his way back toward his company, he caught sight of another Rifles officer moving toward him. A captain. Ah, damn. The lieutenant took the pipe from his mouth, keeping it gripped in his left hand, even as he stamped his heels together and saluted with his right.

"Sir," he said.

Chasing the French Empty Re: Chasing the French

Kyle rode down the line of troops marching down the road. Kyle kept his eyes out for one of his officers, and sure enough he spotted one. The man looked like he was trying to smoke his pipe. Kyle laughed, as the man saw him approach, and hide his pipe. Kyle was soon in front of the man, smiling, at him.

Kyle then climbed down from his horse for a second. After his boots touched the ground Kyle looked up at the man, and gave him a salute. "Good to see you." Kyle greeted the man, as he did he took out his pipe. "Oh by the way, you can smoke you're pipe. I could really care less, since this weather has put a damper on our spirits." Kyle pointed out as he lit his pipe after getting everything together with it.

Kyle let out to large puffs of smoke, then looked down the road to see the long lines of troops marching down the roads. "So, anything to report?" Kyle asked as he took another puff.

A shiver of relief went through Pratt. One could never tell how pliable company officers might be about pipe-smoking. "Thank you, sir," he said. "Nothing of especial importance to report, sir. Other than that the road is growing worse."

Kyle frowned once he heard that the road was going to get worse. This meant that the rain must have made it muddy, or the road was just made to small. Kyle shook his head, while taking a puff from his pipe. "Alright... looks like the men are going to have to get muddy, or sqeeze together a bit more." Kyle said with a laugh. They were already muddy from the battle, so this would do nothing but be a nother walk in the park. In a way.

"There's that, aye, sir," Pratt answered. "It's gotten quite badly rutted from the French wagons passing over it. Our baggage train won't be able to follow much longer, I expect."

He did not mind trudging through mud, himself, but risking ankles and knees on this atrocious road was not something he was all that thrilled about.

Kyle closed his eyes for a quick second to think. He didn't want the baggage train to be left behind, because that would just put more weight on the men, but if it came down to leaving it he'd help in anyway he could. For now he had to think of something. "Hmm... how much weight do you think everything is on there abouts?" Kyle asked taking another puff. As he did, he looked down at the muddy road. "If it comes down to it I'll take some of that weight on my shoulders. I don't like seeing the men lifting more than they already are." Kyle told the officer with a smile.

Pratt drew on his pipe and shrugged. "The lads'll make do with what's in their packs, sir. Sure it's not the first time we've been without the baggage train."

Kyle nodded slightly as he took another puff. "Indeed you are right Pratt. Still though I'll help. After all we don't want the soldiers thinking we are lazy do we?" Kyle pointed out as he took to more puffs. "I know we proved ourselves in battle, but still we have to still keep up with what we showed them in battle." Kyle finished. Kyle then looked around to see and watch as the troops came marching past. "Well then I guess we should return to our spots beside the men." Kyle told Pratt as he climbed back up on his horse.

"Hard to be lazy out here, sir," Pratt said carefully. He shrugged then and snuffed out his pipe. It was indeed time to rejoin the company. "Perhaps we'll fortunate enough to come within skirmishing distance of their rearguard tonight," he added as he tucked his pipe back into his shako.
